Our client is an international designer, manufacturer, marketer of furniture and related products for the office, education and healthcare markets.

Our client is looking for an enthusiastic, collaborative creative to join us as we continue to define our future office furniture products. In this role as Industrial Designer, you will join the furniture product design team. You will work within project parameters to generate, develop and communicate appropriate, innovative product design solutions that meet manufacturing requirements and specific market needs.

As part of your day-to-day work in the Industrial Designer position, you will collaborate with other disciplines including, Project Managers, Product Managers, Design Engineers, Sales, manufacturing and operation leadership. Product design at Global follows a product phased development that concludes in stage gate reviews. Leadership and customer validation may also be included in this process to provide guidance for product, market target alignment.

The Industrial Designer contributes to the development process by way of product design research, concept generation, product communication - including sketching, CAD visuals, physical models/ prototypes, colour/ material/ finish (CMF), product application, technical communication and product design presentations.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Participation in design research activity to understand product application, competitive positioning and targeted alignment.
  • Development of product concepts, responding to the product design brief - meeting appropriate requirements in product (CMF), function, ergonomic fit, application and manufacturability.
  • Evolution of the design concept through a systematic stage gate process of concept refinement that includes interpreting and incorporating appropriate feedback from a multi-disciplinary development team and related stakeholders.
  • Communicate and demonstrate the design concept - form, function, (CMF), manufacturing detail and planning application using models, CAD drawings/ images, graphic presentations and prototypes.
  • Present and share product concepts as required to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Continue to acquire general knowledge of industry related trends, competitive product landscape, workplace evolution, standards, technology advancements and professional industrial design practice.
  • Contribute to supporting and maintaining a professional working environment within the design department, at Global and with internal and external collaborators.
  • Share with Design Management significant project issues, changes and progress as required.

Qualifications/ Educational Requirements

  • Qualified applicants must have a University degree or College diploma in Industrial Design
  • Proficient with design applications, including SolidWorks, Adobe Design Suite and Google/ Microsoft office applications
  • Applications must show their work as much as possible in their portfolio, including product design.
  • Ability to work together in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Competent project and time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Sketching skills
  • Model making skills
  • Competency in creating BOM's/ Costing/ SolidWorks technical drawing output for vendor and internal product fabrication communication and execution.
  • Working knowledge of mass production, manufacturing processes and materials.
  • Competent understanding of human factors and ergonomics.
