Job Description
The AVP, Commercial Underwriting is a market-facing leadership position responsible for driving underwriting profitability and operational effectiveness across the Western region. Reporting to the Chief Underwriting Officer, this individual will have 10 direct reports and collaborate with peers across the country.
You will be the P&L owner for commercial lines within your region, focusing on underwriting strategy, broker engagement, and talent development across lines including commercial auto and property & casualty-from small to large accounts.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement the underwriting strategy for the Western region to drive profitable growth.
- Lead and mentor a team of unit managers and underwriters, fostering a high-performance, inclusive culture.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with sales, distribution, and executive leadership to align regional strategy with national objectives.
- Partner with broker partners to execute joint business plans, improve engagement, and increase market share.
- Monitor branch performance and large loss trends, identifying strategic opportunities for improvement.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and operational standards, including audit readiness and internal controls.
- Champion operational effectiveness initiatives and elevate underwriting standards across the team.
What We're Looking For:
- 10-15 years of P&C industry experience, with at least 5 years in commercial underwriting leadership.
- Solid understanding of commercial auto and property & casualty underwriting across small, mid-market, and large accounts.
- Demonstrated success in managing underwriting profitability and leading distributed or multi-site teams.
- Strong broker relationship and business development experience.
- FCIP, FCAS, FCIA, or equivalent designation required.
- A strategic, collaborative, and people-focused leader.
- Candidates must be based in Calgary or willing to relocate.
Additional Details:
- Occasional travel is required across Western Canada and to head office for leadership meetings.
