THE OPPORTUNITY

The Vice President, Operations will report to the President and play a key role as part of the leadership team. This is a strategic and hands-on leadership position requiring deep operational experience, particularly in managing large-scale projects within industrial and commercial environments. The successful candidate will oversee the daily operational performance and financial oversight of multiple active projects, with accountability for a team of 50+ staff.

This role includes responsibility for functions such as team leadership and development, resource planning, budgeting, project costing and execution, contract oversight, client coordination, and overall operational effectiveness. Based in Edmonton, this individual will be expected to work closely with executive leadership and a long-tenured capable extended leadership team. The ideal candidate will embrace both personal and team development and actively partner with the People Development Team to elevate leadership across the organization. Success in this role will be defined by ensuring operational goals are met and by demonstrating strong alignment with the company's Purpose, Vision and Values.

Responsibilities

Vision and Strategy

  • Develop and execute operational strategies aligned with the organization's long-term goals and growth objectives.
  • Lead organizational growth efforts by setting a strategic vision for innovation, adaptability, and alignment with the company's Purpose, Vision and Values.
  • Lead the key operational departments, ensuring roles and teams support strategic priorities.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of the operations through performance metrics and data-driven analysis.
  • Drive continuous improvement in workflow efficiency to support scalability and customer demand.

Leadership

  • Define clear operational objectives and growth targets, ensuring alignment with the needs and goals of other departments and teams.
  • Direct and coordinate the daily activities of the operations teams while leveraging the unique knowledge and skills of individual team members.
  • Lead by example, showing a commitment to personal and professional growth while fostering a learning culture across the organization. Create and facilitate regular opportunities for management and staff to collaborate on operational practices, workplace policies, and safety standards.
  • Collaborate with the People Development Team on workforce planning, including recruitment, corrective action, and transitions as needed.
  • Build a high-performance culture through strategy, systems, and ongoing capability investment. Support the high-performance culture through strategy, systems, and the operationalization of the company's purpose, vision, and values.
  • Oversee external contractors and manage timelines to ensure project milestones are achieved efficiently.

Client Relations & Contract Management

  • Ensure the team can maintain the highest level of mutual adherence to contract terms and expectations.
  • Oversee timely preparation and submission of change orders, ensuring client approvals and execution are obtained without delay.
  • Oversee the highest level of client satisfaction by ensuring all deliverables are met with a focus on quality and reliability.
  • Ensure that client concerns are escalated properly and efficiently, providing prompt, effective resolution and communication.
  • Ensure the outcomes of contract issues or disputes, are constructive and aligned with business objectives.

Fiscal Accountability

  • Play a key role in building the department's annual budget, with full accountability for managing and operating within approved financial targets.
  • Develop and oversee financial tracking systems to monitor costs and support informed decision-making.
  • Analyze operational and financial data to assess efficiency and drive performance.
  • Ensure responsible management of departmental budgets, maintaining alignment with organizational financial goals.
  • Review and authorize expenditures and time-off requests for direct reports.
  • Evaluate, recommend, and authorize purchases, including equipment and resource investments.

Communications

  • Prepare and deliver regular updates to the President on key operational and strategic matters.
  • Oversee and maintain strong working relationships with external partners and vendors.
  • Ensure a positive client experience throughout all project phases, addressing and resolving escalated issues promptly.
  • Establish communication norms that support cross-functional alignment and ensure information clarity across departments.
  • Conduct monthly one-on-one meetings with direct reports to support performance, development, and alignment.
  • Maintain regular and proactive communication with project delivery and estimation teams to ensure alignment on project scope, timelines, and resource requirements.

Health & Safety

  • Consistent emphasis on safety protocols minimizing workplace incidents.
  • Ensure all projects meet or exceed safety obligations and regulatory requirements.
  • Fulfill legal and contractual safety responsibilities to protect the company and project stakeholders.
  • Ensure health and safety initiatives are implemented, including regular participation in safety meetings and ad-hoc programs.

  • Engage in ongoing training and coaching to strengthen alignment with the company's purpose, vision and values and further develop leadership effectiveness.

  • Demonstrate hands-on understanding of business operations and a learning mindset.
  • Proactively leverage the expertise of the people development team to support team growth and higher performance.
  • Take ownership of project financials and clearly articulate KPIs for both teams as well as individuals.
  • Team focus has begun to shift from reactive execution to proactive, future-oriented planning.
  • Identify and implement incremental improvements to enhance efficiency and optimize processes within an already high-performing operation.

THE INDIVIDUAL

Given the pivotal role this individual will be expected to play in achieving the strategic objectives of the company and in supporting the success of the organization, it is essential that the successful candidate possess the following core competencies, experience, and attributes:

Education

  • Post-secondary education in business, contract management, or a construction-related field is preferred; however, relevant experience will also be considered in lieu of post-secondary education.

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in operations, preferably within the commercial and industrial construction sectors.
  • Strong background in contract management, including contract interpretation, change order administration, dispute resolution, and effective communication in these areas is highly desirable.
  • Proven success leading large, multidisciplinary teams with a focus on technical excellence and operational efficiency.
  • Has engaged in self-development, particularly in emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and personal growth.
  • Familiarity with general construction site layouts is required; experience in reviewing construction drawings and related documentation is considered a strong asset.
