Role: Procurement Specialist (Hybrid)

Location: Sarnia (ON), Calgary (AB), or Red Deer (AB)

Introduction

Brunel is currently seeking a Procurement Specialist for our petrochemical client who will be instrumental in advancing our client's services and materials strategies that will maximize long-term value for their polyethylene (PE) products. The successful incumbent will work collaboratively within a team of Procurement Specialists in the advancement of short to long-term strategies that lead to increased hard and soft value considering the Total Cost of Ownership across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development of enterprise-wide category strategies to achieve cost savings, value generation, and improve quality and service levels by identifying opportunity areas such as product standardization, supplier consolidation and leveraging opportunities
  • Provide negotiating and contracting leadership for strategic contracts for the procurement of materials and services to achieving business needs
  • Develop the necessary competitive bid documents, through collaboration with the business and content experts in support of the agreed upon contracting strategies
  • Oversee all spend activity and purchase requests for assigned category areas and determine proper action plan for all purchases that meet the procurement involvement threshold (e.g., strategically source, tactically source, user purchase, etc.)
  • Provide category procurement subject matter expertise to the associated business area and seek out expertise from business or function when necessary
  • Drive the use of procurement best practices and standardization of procurement processes for assigned categories
  • Support the management of competitive market data, for the purpose of benchmarking and analysis, and develop a system for tracking and recording contractor performance
  • Communicate any major market trends, risks and opportunities to key stakeholders and work collaboratively with the business teams to develop mitigating solutions for identified project vulnerabilities associated with assigned category and construction contractor market risks
  • Effectively work with business groups as a trusted advisor to determine desired product/service specifications and projected demand when making recommended action plans
  • Collaborate with Category Managers to ensure that our client has an excellent understanding of the supply market and work with the business/function teams to provide input for creating innovative win-win customer and supplier strategies
  • Coordinate with other Procurement Specialists to lead cross-functional teams to execute strategic sourcing projects for assigned category areas by assisting with sourcing strategy, negotiations, and supplier selection and overseeing contract execution
  • Execute Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) process including supplier stratification/classification, governance, performance management, and supplier development
  • Lead Continuous Improvement projects to improve supplier performance, innovation, value, and decrease costs
  • Proactively identify supplier value generation opportunities for assigned category areas and recommend key actions to the appropriate stakeholders
  • Participate/lead specific category management opportunities and improvements initiatives that maximize profitability and lead execution of the initiatives, when necessary, while working with business groups in the development of sourcing strategies options and overall approach to the market

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in supply chain, or Business Management with 8+ years related experience and a progressive record of professional development OR 12+ years combination of post-secondary education
  • At least 8 years of experience in the procurement of Materials and Services in a manufacturing and construction environment, handling specific categories for example: MRO, Capital Equipment, Professional Services, Responsible Care, Construction and Maintenance.
  • Professional Designation (i.e., Certified Purchasing Manager, PMP, CSCMP)
  • Experience in Strategic Sourcing/Procurement, Performance Measurement, Contract Negotiation, Project Management, Category Management, Business Analysis, Spend Analysis, Supplier Relationship Management
  • Experience in SAP-ARIBA ERP system and e-sourcing tool and advanced MS Excel skills is considered a strong asset
  • First-hand knowledge of strategic sourcing methodology with pragmatism to manage exceptions
  • Demonstrated ability to form effective relationships with key stakeholders under challenging deadlines and market conditions
  • Ability to develop category and sourcing strategies by identifying opportunity areas and value levers
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively direct and leverage procurement spend in assigned category areas by leading enterprise wide cross-functional teams
  • Experience managing and maintaining strong supplier relationships with a focus on safety and Responsible Care
  • Ability to persuade and educate stakeholders so that they gain a full appreciation for the various procurement contract risks, mitigation approaches, and realistic service levels and cost
  • Strong leadership presence and negotiation/contract management experience
  • Knowledge and experience with procurement/spend systems data and analysis
  • Strong interpersonal and mentoring skills to coach and mentor other team members
  • Must have strong organizational skills
  • Strong problem solving, analytical and report summation, and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to apply change management and consulting skills/knowledge and expertise
  • Presentation and communication skills
  • Can perform Cost Benefit Analysis / TCO Analysis
  • Familiar with importation and logistics requirements including Incoterms for the shipment and delivery of spare parts or equipment and work permit process for services provided by workers cog from outside Canada
