About the Position:

The Field Estimator is responsible for preparing comprehensive and accurate cost estimates for the labour and equipment required to construct a variety of structural steel projects across North America.

Main responsibilities will include:

  • Review proposal specifications and preliminary drawings for field to determine scope of work and determine the quantity of materials and labour required for the project (takeoff process) and any other factors that may impact overall cost.
  • Complete full quantity take-off of all labour, equipment and materials required to complete the project as per contract specifications.
  • Analyzes site conditions, specifications, safety requirements, and takeoff quantities and determines the optimum equipment.
  • Calculate man hours required for all associated work with the project, while determining the efficient balance between shop work and field work.
  • Solicit competitive pricing from vendors and suppliers.
  • Budget overall equipment and labour costs for projects.
  • Recalculate estimates in response to any client/architectural specification changes, as required.
  • Implement best practices and procedures to ensure consistency.
  • Attending site walks and bid review meetings to explain erection methodology and support the sales team.

Position Requirements:

  • Post-Secondary degree or diploma in engineering, Construction Technology or equivalent technical field
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and ability to learn custom estimating platforms.
  • 5+ years' experience in construction, fabrication, field or project estimating.
  • Demonstrated understanding of construction procedures, field estimating principles, conceptual estimating, and cost analysis.

Skills, Knowledge and Competency Requirements:

  • Knowledge of key principles involved in bid preparation, including quantity take-off procedures, sub-trade procurement, pricing and bid procedures
  • Deep understanding of structural steel erection techniques
  • Working knowledge of site safety, union labour requirements, and field crew logistics
  • Proficiency with estimating and design software (Bluebeam and Tekla Structures)
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and 3D models
  • High attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
  • Effective communicator with strong analytical critical and creative thinking skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and collaboratively as required
