Job Summary
The Assistant Beaver Controller is responsible for assessing, controlling and eliminating risks, remove beaver pests and dismantle dams, and liaising with Water Management and the Track Supervisor. The role is performed outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions and ensures a safe working environment.
Working Conditions
Shift work, with overtime when required.
Long periods of travel required, including overnight.
Primarily work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Repetitive physical activity.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 70 pounds occasionally.
Major Responsibilities
Report to the Water Management and Track Supervisor and follow instructions/recommendations from technical support personnel of government departments in question.
Be able to recognize and assess risks and hazards related to beaver activity and make decisions to control or eliminate these hazards.
In order to control and eliminate risks, controller and/or assistant beaver activity controllers must remove beaver pests from certain locations.
Removal of beaver pests and dismantling of dams must be conducted in accordance with the provisions of the provincial permit issues by the department of natural resources (e.g, trapping, hunting or trapping within the limits prescribed by the permit - except in emergencies where there is an imminent danger).
Prepare reports on daily beaver dam and beaver activities.
Prepare environmental incidence reports before dismantling or breaking beaver dams.
Must be able to use a computer.
Use portable equipment to inspect and dismantle beaver dams. The nature of the work (controlling beaver actvities) requires employees to walk on uneven terrain away from the railway right-of-way.
Remove all beaver from areas designated as high-risk.
Requirements
Relevant work experience in similar working conditions or regulatory and safety environment.
Must be able to work without immediate supervision.
Extensive knowledge of the territory.
Awareness of problems and risks related to beaver pests.
Valid Provincial hunting and trapping permit. (Candidates will undergo preliminary screening based on their current experience. If the selected candidates do not have a trapping and hunting permit, the Company will pay for training and permit costs.)
Firearm handling course and valid firearm acquisition license.
Ability to work in forested areas - read maps; use a compass, GPS unit, canoe and all-terrain vehicle.
Successfully completed courses in water management, pest control, hunting safety and Clean Water Act. (Training will be provided.)
Able to assess environmental impacts of breaking beaver dams and able to limit consequence for the local environment.
Displays common sense and good judgment.
Certificate or successful completion of exam on CROR Book 'A'.
Must have a valid drivers license.

This position is a unionized position, as such pay and benefits are governed by the applicable Collective Agreement.
Paid Training
Successful candidates will take part in a paid four-week training program at a CN Campus (Winnipeg, MB) with additional on-the-job training to help ensure that they have received the adequate knowledge to operate in accordance with regulatory requirements and CN's safety standards. The training is primarily on health and safety rules as successful completion of the classroom and on-the-job training is required to continue employment as a Track Maintainer at CN.
