Director of Business Development - Concrete Industry North America

UNIVERSAL MATTER, a Canadian company (founded July 2019), has developed cleaner, faster, more sustainable, and more economical technology to scaleup and commercialize graphene, a carbon-based nanomaterial that can provide much improved mechanical and conductivity properties for other materials. Our proprietary and patented Flash Joule Heating process can convert diverse carbon sources into graphene with tunable characteristics for an almost unlimited number of applications. Headquartered in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, with U.S. and U.K. Innovation Centers in Houston TX and Redcar UK. Universal Matter's vision is to build on its strong R&D foundation to scale its production process and become the world's leading supplier of lower cost and higher quality graphene materials from diverse carbon sources. Our first manufacturing site (Burlington ON) commenced operations in May 2024. We have advanced product solutions (graphene-based dispersions) for concrete, asphalt, paints/coatings/composites, and tire/rubber markets.

Director of Business Development - Position Summary:

The Director of Business Development drives topline growth for the company's portfolio of graphene- based concrete admixtures (GenableTM Concrete). The Director identifies high value opportunities with ready-mix producers, precast manufacturers, DOT's. and civil contractors, converts them into commercial wins, and scales pilot projects into multiyear supply agreements. This role will be supported by the Application Development team in R&D and Marketing.

Position Responsibilities - Primary:

Qualify and cultivate a pipeline of strategic accounts (ready-mix, precast, mega-project contractors, DOTs, etc.). An initial sales pipeline has been established. A multi-million- dollar pipeline of new opportunities progressing to advanced qualification stage in first year. Lead value-selling engagements: performance trials, value proposition modelling, lifecycle carbon analyses. Close at least US $10 M in new revenue in the first full year.

Negotiate pricing, supply terms, and IP clauses. Ensure deals meet margin targets and risk thresholds

Map regulatory/ESG trends (low-carbon concrete specs, EPD mandates). Feed insights into Marketing and R&D roadmaps

Present at ACI, PCI, NRMCA, GCCA and related events. Publish technical papers (with R&D support), case studies, and co-marketing pieces

Key KPI's - New Revenue Closed (NRR), Qualified Pipeline Added, Gross-Margin % on New Deals, Trial-to-Commercial Conversion Rate, Avg. Sales Cycle Duration

• This position is expected to evolve into a Sales/Business Development team leadership

opportunity for North America and potentially globally.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Education: Bachelor's degree in: Civil Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or Construction Management. An advanced degree or MBA is preferred.

Experience:

  • 10+ years in concrete technology, cement or construction chemicals, with at least 5 years in business development or strategic sales.
  • Demonstrated success closing CDN $7.5M deals with ready-mix or precast producers.
  • Deep understanding of ASTM C494, ACI 318, DOT spec landscape, and mix-design optimization
  • 5 + years management/leadership experience and an entrepreneurial mindset.

Technical & Commercial Skills:

  • Working knowledge of admixture chemistry (PCE, set-controllers, accelerators, shrinkage-reducing agents, nano-additives).
  • Ability to run total-cost-of-ownership and CO2-reduction calculations for clients. Strong financial modelling, negotiation, and contract drafting abilities.
  • Credible communicator with plant managers, R&D chemists, and C-suite buyers. Hunter mentality, high resiliency, and consultative selling style.
  • Cross-functional leadership-can marshal Marketing, Technical Service, and Supply Chain in deal teams.
  • Meets commitments, is high energy, self-motivated, works independently, accepts accountability, handles changes, sets personal standards, stays focused under pressure.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge and use of AI tools (ChatGPT, Perplexity, etc.) to improve position emectiveness Knowledge and adherence with applicable health and safety regulations

Travel Requirement

35% across North America; occasional travel to global R&D or manufacturing hubs and international industry conferences.
