Key Responsibilities

Based in Fredericton, NB, our new real estate/commercial lawyer will have a central position within our dynamic legal team, taking ownership of leasing matters within our legal department and leading our legal lease documentation team, among other things. Key responsibilities will include:

Managing end-to-end legal leasing process and legal leasing function, including leading and overseeing Plaza's lease documentation strategies and team, streamlining lease documentation workflows, and ensuring high-quality and timely delivery of commercial leasing agreements and associated documentation;

Owning the legal leasing lifecycle - drafting, reviewing and negotiating all forms of commercial lease agreements and related instruments (letters of intent, offers to lease, lease agreements, amending agreements, renewals and extensions, transfers, subleases, relocations, expansions, assignments, surrenders, terminations etc.)

Overseeing and coordinating the tracking of critical dates and leasing conditions with the lease documentation team;

Providing strategic legal advice to internal stakeholders on leasing matters across the business, including lease terms, landlord-tenant issues, property rights and risk management;

Collaborating cross-functionally with operations, construction, accounting, leasing and other departments to support commercial objectives; advising on business and legal concerns; and responding to internal and external inquiries and interpreting lease-related issues;

Drafting, reviewing and negotiating agreements of purchase and sale, counteroffers, transfers and any other required documents and agreements regarding the acquisition or sale of properties and commercial centres;

Drafting and reviewing various other documents or agreements of a commercial nature;

Managing and supervising claims, disputes, and litigation matters; collaborating with outside counsel as needed; and actively taking part in the development of strategies in connection therewith.

Qualifications

  • Qualified lawyer licensed to practice in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or Ontario, with membership in good standing with the respective Law Society;
  • At least 3 years experience in real estate and commercial leasing transactions;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

  • Experience leading teams or managing professionals;
  • Detail-oriented with excellent documentation, drafting, and negotiation skills;
  • Pragmatic approach to problem solving and analytical review;
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and collaborative environment;
  • Effective time management skills to efficiently coordinate multiple competing priorities and deadlines.
