Position Summary
Based in Surrey BC, the Payroll and Benefits Accountant is responsible for payroll and benefits related accounting, compliance and reporting functions. This role works closely with Finance, Human Resources, and other departments to ensure accurate payroll financial records, provide reporting, and improve processes. Additional duties include but are not limited to:
Responsibilities
Responsible for the accurate timely and confidential preparation of the payroll cycle which includes update Vacation Payable, Pensions - Understand the Annual reporting process, RRSP Spreadsheet, Sick Hours/Days Spreadsheet
Develop and implement policies and procedures to improve and eliminate risk in payroll, benefits, and HR. Update and maintain employee handbook, new hire and benefit enrolment packages, payroll, benefit, HR spreadsheets.
Complete regular payroll and benefit audits - update as required.

iv. Equitable, Industrial Alliance, Manulife monthly review of Statements
- Prepares journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end reporting and reconciliations.
- Supports general ledger (GL) reconciliation and financial audits related to payroll activities.
- Ensures compliance with federal, provincial, and local payroll regulations.
- Stays updated on legislative changes affecting payroll accounting and financial reporting.
- Collaborate with Finance teams to ensure accurate financial reporting of payroll costs.
- Provides data-driven insights and analysis to improve payroll and cost management.
- Expense reporting, tracking, and analysis for wages and other general and administrative expenses, identifying areas for cost efficiencies and process improvements.
- Identifies and implements payroll process efficiencies and automation opportunities.
- Supports system upgrades, testing, and enhancements to payroll and related financial systems.
- Maintains accurate payroll data in accounting systems.
- Provides payroll-related guidance and training to internal stakeholders as needed.
- Engages across all levels of the organization to create and promote a safe and respectful work environment.
- Responsible for keeping up to date employee personnel records- Contact information, Address, Email, Salary, Vacation
- Employee Advocate for payroll and benefits support - training employees on benefits, how to read pay statements, assist in hiring process, onboarding of new employees, review new hire packages/benefits packages with employees when questions arise.
- Participation in meetings with regards to benefits renewals and analysis of best practices
- Monthly mandatory participation in webinars offered by National Payroll Institute - related to annual updates to Labour relations for both BC/ALTA and other payroll legislation changes.
- Update Receiver General /PD7 Spreadsheet
- Update EHT and WCB - Understand the quarterly reporting process.
- T4 and T2200 Year End Processing
- Process monthly expenses for Sales Team and Managers
- Reconcile Credit Card Statements
Assist Accounts Payable and Controller as required.
Other special projects and tasks as assigned.
The profile we are looking for
- Certificate or Degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, working towards CPA would be an asset.
- Minimum (2) years of payroll accounting experience, preferably in a corporate environment.
- Working towards Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) or Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) designation is an asset.
- Member of National Payroll Institute and member of the CPHR is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of payroll laws, regulations, and best practices.
- Must have experience with payroll accounting software and accounting systems, experience with ADP Workforce Now is an necessary.
- Advanced proficiency in Office 365, Business Central, Teams, Outlook, Excel and financial reporting tools, Jet Reports and Power BI.
- Excellent attention to detail, problem solving skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively across departments.
