About the Role

A rapidly growing life sciences company is seeking a hands-on Automation Support Specialist to serve as the on-site lead for automation support in its Montreal-based operations. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic lab environment, enjoys troubleshooting complex workflows, and has a strong understanding of liquid handling systems and the automation logic behind them.

As the primary automation support on the ground, you'll act as the link between automation engineering, process development, and late-stage R&D, ensuring that scientific workflows are efficiently implemented and maintained on automated platforms. This is a lab-embedded position and will play a critical role in stabilizing and scaling automated systems for day-to-day use.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the on-site automation SME, supporting lab staff in operating, troubleshooting, and improving automated workflows.
  • Own, maintain, and adapt automation protocols to ensure reliability and performance across high-throughput environments.
  • Partner cross-functionally with scientists, engineers, and late-stage development teams to translate scientific protocols into executable automation processes.
  • Troubleshoot automation issues by identifying root causes and linking lab outcomes to automation script behavior.
  • Work with drag-and-drop or block-based interfaces, but be able to understand underlying scripting concepts (e.g., variables, functions, loop structures).
  • Provide real-time support to operators, ensuring minimal downtime and strong alignment with production needs.
  • Contribute to the evolution of automation infrastructure by suggesting improvements to protocols, workflows, or systems based on observed performance.

What We're Looking For

  • 3-6 years of hands-on lab automation experience with liquid handlers (e.g., Hamilton, TECAN), including the ability to understand and troubleshoot automation scripts.
  • Comfortable working with visual scripting environments, and capable of interpreting or modifying logic when workflows need adjustment.
  • Experience connecting lab-level performance issues to underlying automation behavior (e.g., script errors, pipetting issues, timing logic).
  • Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to support cross-functional partners and communicate effectively with scientists, engineers, and operators.
  • Experience in biotech, diagnostics, or life science R&D or process development environments.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Life Sciences, or a related field.

Why Join?

  • Be the go-to automation lead at a growing, mission-driven company.
  • Work at the intersection of science, engineering, and operations, enabling faster and more scalable experimentation.
  • Join a company where curiosity, independence, and collaboration are highly valued-and where your impact will be tangible.
