Reporting to the Director, Fleet Safety the Fleet Safety Advisor will support the Team by providing boots-on-the-ground CVOR Compliance & Education, supporting operations and liaising between the Fleet Operations Team, Corporate HSE Team and Operations Teams. This position forms part of a larger Fleet Safety Team spread across Canada.

This position will primarily oversee Eastern Ontario from the Quebec border to Belleville, including Quebec Operations.

Primary Scope of Role

  • A subject matter expert for CVOR, Provincial Highway Traffic Acts, Regulations, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Federal Law and GIP Policies & Procedures as they relate to Transportation Safety.
  • Ensure GIP drivers adhere to all legislation and company policies.
  • Conduct weekly site and shop audits to ensure all required documentation related to drivers, vehicles and maintenance is up to date and meets all CVOR requirements.
  • Monitor drivers Hours of Service on paper or on the Geotab Drive ELD system and coach both drivers and operations to mitigate any violations.
  • Provide detailed reports on assessments, trends, competency measurements, and re-certifications as appropriate and/or requested.
  • Conduct on-scene and tabletop collision and public incident investigations, implement corrective actions and administer the files from start to finish.
  • Assist in the development of Fleet Safety related training content, Policies, Procedures and SWP's.
  • Re-train GIP drivers either proactively or in a remedial corrective action fashion to help reinforce policies and procedures to enhance their safe driving and operating skills.

Specific Duties

  • Act as the main point of contact 24/7 for CVOR, Provincial Highway Traffic Acts, Regulations, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Federal Law and GIP Policies & Procedures.
  • Conduct field observations or ride-a-longs with written assessments/feedback/re-certification to the driver and management.
  • Frequent early morning yard visits to observe drivers conducting pre-trip inspections, answer questions and carry out safety talks as required.
  • Review Incident Reports related to Motor Vehicle Collisions, Public Incidents, and CVOR related matters to ensure proper completion and assignment of corrective actions.
  • Organize and instruct classroom theory and hands-on practical courses including but not limited to: CVOR Awareness, Defensive Driving, Cargo Securement, Fleet Policy, Pre-Trip Inspections, Electronic Logs, etc.
  • Monitoring weekly driver safety GPS score card reports and re-training high risk drivers on safe driving practices and assigning online training where necessary.
  • Fast paced environment with multiple competing priorities.
  • Frequent overnight/long distance travel to GIP sites.
  • Ability to flex time as required to meet operational requirements such as early morning, evenings and weekends.
  • Equal amounts of time will be spent in a construction type field setting and an office setting where regular reoccurring administrative duties are required.
  • Weekly, monthly and quarterly individual data compilation deadlines to create team reports.

Position Requirements

  • Minimum Grade 12 Education.
  • Must reside within 1.5 hours of the City of Ottawa.
  • Post Secondary Education in Law, Transport & Logistics or HSE would be an asset.
  • Previous work experience such as Dispatching, Driver Training, Transportation & Logistics Supervision, Driver Safety would be an asset.
  • Bilingual (Basic French Oral and English Oral & Written) is a minimum requirement.
  • Proficient in pc-based computers and programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, WhatsApp & Power Point.
  • Well versed in the use of smartphones and apps as field visits and inspections are recorded using a safety management system app.
  • Clean Drivers Abstract with no demerit points.
  • Minimum Class G Licence, a Commercial Licence would be an asset.
  • Experience with ELD systems, specifically GeoTab Drive.
  • Advanced understanding of CVOR, Pre-Trips, Hours of Service and the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.
  • Demonstrates a strong aptitude for learning and problem solving.
  • Ability to lift 50lbs and climb in, out, and under commercial vehicles.
  • Strong time management and organization with the ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • Must seek clarification when unsure.
