As we expand our presence in Western Canada, we are seeking a seasoned and dynamic Director of Construction to lead operations from our Calgary office.
Position Overview
The Director of Construction - Western Canada is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing all regional construction activities. Reporting to the VP or Construction, the Director will manage project execution, regional staff, client relationships, and business development initiatives throughout Alberta and neighboring provinces. This role requires deep experience in both ICI and residential construction and a strong understanding of Alberta's employment, safety, and building code legislation.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic oversight of all ICI and residential projects in Alberta and Western Canada.
- Lead and manage a high-performing team of Project Managers, Site Supervisors, and support staff.
- Ensure projects meet safety, schedule, budget, and quality requirements.
- Champion compliance with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards and the Employment Standards Code.
- Collaborate across departments (Estimating, Finance, Project Management ) to support successful project delivery.
- Maintain and build strong client relationships; act as a senior escalation point for all construction-related matters.
- Support growth initiatives by identifying new project opportunities and supporting business development.
- Drive a strong safety culture, ensure COR-aligned practices are embedded across all job sites.
- Mentor and coach construction leaders; support team training and professional development.
- Provide support with Project Management responsibilities as a backup or alternate when required. This includes stepping in during absences, high-volume periods, or as otherwise directed to ensure continuity in project execution.
Qualifications
Education and Certifications
- A post-secondary degree or diploma in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architectural Technology, Building Science, or a related field is required.
- An MBA, Master of Construction Management, or equivalent advanced degree is an asset.
- Gold Seal Certification (GSC) or Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of the Alberta Building Code, Occupational Health & Safety legislation, and Alberta Employment Standards Code is essential.
- LEED accreditation, CSTS training, and familiarity with COR safety program standards are considered assets.
Experience and Skills
- Minimum 10 years of construction experience in ICI and residential sectors, including 5+ years in a senior management or director-level role.
- Proven ability to lead multiple projects concurrently and manage teams in both union and non-union settings.
- Excellent leadership, communication, conflict resolution, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with construction management software and tools (e.g., Procore, MS Project).
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license and ability to travel within Western Canada.
