We currently have an opportunity for a Legal Counsel in our Legal Department in the Toronto office. This is a twenty-four-month contract position.

Duties

This position will primarily be accountable for providing legal advice and drafting and negotiating agreements and documentation in the areas of commercial real estate and commercial leasing. The lawyer will partner with the McDonald's Canadian Asset Management team and other internal business units to manage McDonald's existing real property portfolio across the country. The position will also support the Restaurant Development team in opening new restaurants as needed. This role offers an opportunity to hone existing skills, learn new areas of practice, and work closely with and be mentored by legal and business team members.

Principal accountabilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Support McDonald's business teams with drafting and negotiating commercial leases and license agreements
  • Provide advice on title, off-title, zoning, construction, and other due diligence matters
  • Identify and implement process improvements and working efficiencies within the Legal team and across the business
  • Build precedent and template documents and augment existing Legal Department resources

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and qualifications:

  • Legal degree (LLB or JD) and membership in good standing of a provincial or territorial law society in Canada
  • 4-7 years of commercial real estate legal experience
  • Prior in-house legal experience from a major corporation is an asset
  • Outstanding analytical, drafting, and negotiation skills, with an ability to learn quickly and apply technical skills to various business initiatives
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working on cross-functional teams
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
