Akkodis is seeking a Senior Hardware Compliance Designer for a contract position with a client in Toronto, ON (Hybrid), and ideally looking for experience with EMC concepts (Cabling, Grounding techniques, Surge Protection, etc).
Position: Senior Hardware Compliance Designer
Location: 105 Moatfield Drive, Toronto, ON (Hybrid)
Contract
The successful candidate will assist in the hardware qualification, certification, and verification activities of new or revised products and lead associated reports to customer acceptance. Utilizing processes based on established engineering principles to meet requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) tests on electronic devices designed for railway signalling systems according to the industry standards
- Conduct environmental qualification tests such as temperature, humidity, and shock & vibration on electronic devices designed for railway signalling systems according to the industry standards
- Must be familiar with railway (or similar industry) EMC and environmental standards, including EN 61000 series, EN 50121 series, EN 50125, EN 50155, FCC, AREMA, MIL standards, etc.
- Must know grounding, shielding, surge protection, and other basic EMC concepts
- Must be able to operate hardware test equipment and simulators that are deployed in the hardware qualification test process
- Participate in troubleshooting activities about EMC tests and provide relevant measurements and technical details to the design team
- Prepare project EMC documentations, including EMC Control Plan, EMC Compatibility Study, EMC Hazard Analysis, and EMC Test Report, and drive them to customer acceptance
- Prepares hardware environmental qualification plans and reports to specified requirements, understands the impact of the requirements, and can provide feedback on different approaches
- Be able to lead subcontractors about specific EMC site measurements in line with customer requirements
- Participate in the process of the ISA (International Standards on Auditing) committee audit on EMC and environmental requirements
- Familiarity with the topic of fire, smoke, and toxicity is an asset: standards include EN 45545 and NFPA 130
- Familiar with requirements management tools such as DOORS, Polarion, etc., and requirement verification process as per CENELEC standards
- Responsible for working harmoniously in a team environment while maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the job and relations with others
- Developing junior team members of the department by assisting, as required.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent combination of diplomas and work experience
- 6 to 10+ years of professional experience
- Excellent knowledge of EMC concepts (Cabling, Grounding techniques, Surge Protection, etc.)
- Be able to operate EMC Engineering measurement tools
- Professional verbal skills to allow clear communication without ambiguity
- Effective writing skills to allow documents to be prepared in a clear and concise format with sufficient information so that further clarification is not required
- The ability to follow directions and work instructions, and to use good judgment in the performance of assigned work
- The ability to effectively present pros and cons for various courses of action
- Keeping track of progress on all assigned tasks
- Verifying that all assigned work has been completed accurately
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- 6 to 10+ years of experience in the Railway Signalling industry working with international standards
- In-depth knowledge of EMC principles impacting the emission and immunity performance of the electronic circuits
- Proficient in performing EMC analysis, assessing the proposed changes to the existing design, and building similarity cases
- Devising and running tests to verify functionality, and identifying and solving problems
- Be able to operate complex EMC measurement tools in the lab and at the site
- Knowledgeable in radio certification requirements and process, including FCC, Industry Canada, ETSI, and relevant safety standards
- Familiar with the process of CE certification and the associated European Directive for electronics equipment
- Reviewing any applicable specifications, standards, rules, etc., and ensuring that the appropriate actions resulting from this review have been taken
- Enjoys staying current with the technology of the discipline
