Role Overview:
Are you passionate about shaping the future of marketing in a rapidly evolving regulatory landscape? The Canadian Marketing Association (CMA) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director, Public Policy to join our team. Reporting to the Chief Public Affairs and Governance Officer, you will be a key player in assessing public policy and legislative developments relevant to marketers, help the association formulate positions on these issues, and help develop and implement strategies to effectively convey these positions to key audiences, including helping to shape and manage research projects.
As the Director, Public Policy, you will be instrumental in shaping the association's stance on critical issues ranging from AI and privacy to fiscal, economic and trade issues. You will manage senior committees comprising of representatives from CMA member companies and be responsible for delivering a positive experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Policy monitoring: Monitor and analyze public policy developments affecting the marketing community, including artificial intelligence, privacy, fiscal and economic matters, trade, competition, and misinformation.
- Committee management: Manage and motivate CMA committees in several policy areas, including privacy and data, artificial intelligence, and AdTech, fostering collaboration and driving impactful discussions.
- Research: Supporting the design, reporting and presentation of research to various stakeholder audiences.
- Stakeholder engagement: Build positive relationships with industry partners and government decision-makers, gaining insights into policy direction and emerging issues.
- Advocacy: Identify opportunities for senior CMA leadership to convey the views of our membership to key stakeholders, ensuring well-prepared briefings and representation.
- Content development: Harness members' expertise to create submissions, briefs, position papers and action plans on policy issues. Develop informative and engaging content for marketing professionals, consumers and other stakeholders, including but not limited to guides, blogs and training.
- Website management: Ensure CMA's website is current and meaningful, providing valuable information and insights for the marketing community and key audiences.
Skills and Qualifications:
Education: University or college degree in public policy, communications, business/public administration, political science, or a related field.
Experience: 10+ years of relevant experience in public policy issues management or privacy management, either in the private, public or non-profit sector.
Knowledge: Sound understanding of government at provincial and federal levels, and familiarity with current trends and developments in politics and public policy. Strong understanding of research design principles and their application in public affairs contexts.
Skills: Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, including excellent writing and editing abilities to translate complex topics into clear, concise, and actionable reports. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, project management platforms, digital/social media best practices.
Ideal / Assets: Ability to communicate in French, familiarity with research platforms, IAPP Certification and/or Membership

The position offers a remote-first work model that blends remote work with in-person monthly team meetings, networking and CMA events and in-office collaboration as needed by the role.
