Siksika Nation has an opportunity for a Senior Draftsperson to join their Engineering Services team to successfully deliver projects. Draftspersons at SNES work in offices and on-site, helping design and update plans for infrastructure projects like roads, bridges, and water systems. Their fieldwork involves site visits, surveys, and inspections, often in rural areas and various weather conditions. They collaborate with engineers, project managers, and Siksika leaders to ensure designs meet community needs and sustainability goals. Their challenges include extreme weather, coordination with stakeholders, and compliance with funding requirements, highlighting their vital role in Siksika's infrastructure development.

The Senior Design Draftsman plays a crucial role in the engineering design process, focusing on the creation and refinement of intricate engineering designs, detailed drawings, and accompanying technical documentation for both residential and commercial construction projects. This position demands a deep understanding of architectural and engineering principles, as well as expertise in advanced CAD software to produce high-quality designs.

The ideal candidate will be adept at translating complex concepts into clear and precise drawings, ensuring that every detail aligns with project specifications and adheres to regulatory standards. They should possess a strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering accurate and timely drawings.

Collaboration is key in this role, as the Senior Design Draftsman will work closely with architects, engineers, and other professionals across multiple disciplines. A proven track record of successful project execution, showcasing the ability to manage multiple tasks while meeting deadlines and maintaining high standards of quality, is essential for success in this position.

Supervision Received: Reports to Technical Manager, Siksika Engineering Services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Drafting & Design:

  • Engage in the comprehensive development and meticulous preparation of engineering designs and detailed drawings, utilizing preliminary concepts, sketches, rigorous engineering calculations, and specific project specifications as foundational materials.
  • Generate intricate 2D and 3D drawings, along with accompanying charts and schedules, ensuring that as-built drawings accurately reflect field adjustments made through red-line markups.
  • Execute the drafting of structural steel drawings, including precise piling layouts and schedules, detailed concrete layouts, and comprehensive building drawings that meet industry standards.
  • Produces civil engineering drawings that encapsulate the necessary features for infrastructure projects.
  • Leverage advanced software to create sophisticated Building Information Models (BIM), enabling a collaborative and multidimensional approach to design and project management.
  • Develop conceptual design sketches that facilitate in-depth analysis while creating engineering drawings specifically tailored for both production and manufacturing processes.
  • Furthermore, devise innovative designs and layouts that demonstrate a blend of theoretical understanding and practical design knowledge, ensuring they meet the rigorous demands of contemporary engineering challenges.

Technical Documentation & Analysis:

  • Prepare complete documentation packages, including design specifications, material lists, and technical reports.
  • Verify drawings are correct to specifications, codes, and other regulations.
  • Estimate material and production costs for designs.
  • Check and verify design drawings to conform to specifications and design data.
  • Record and file stick files, forms and Material Take offs (MTOs) .

Collaboration & Supervision:

  • Collaborate with engineers, architects, project managers, and other team members to review and refine designs.
  • Potentially direct the work of junior designers/drafters, providing guidance and instruction.
  • Work within a multi-disciplinary team including Process, Mechanical, Civil, Structural & Architectural, Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls and Piping.
  • Collaborate with the design team to review drawings and designs.
  • Make adjustments to drawings according to feedback from engineers or architects.

Compliance & Quality:

  • Ensure designs comply with company regulations, quality standards, and relevant building codes.
  • Assure that work complies with the accuracy level and time constraints required for the assignment.
  • Setting up drawing formats and configuration files

Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience as a design draftsman, preferably in residential and/or commercial construction.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and other relevant CAD software, including 3D modeling tools (e.g., SketchUp).
  • Strong understanding of architectural and engineering design principles.
  • Solid math and analytical skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of construction materials and methods.
  • Ability to interpret and apply building codes and regulations.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to meet safety requirements to attend site visits.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Building Information Modeling (BIM) software.
  • Experience preparing construction specifications, costs and material estimates

Education and Experience:

Technical school certification/degree in drafting, engineering technology, architecture, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Bachelor's Degree etc, or related field preferred.

Minimum of Five years of relevant work experience as a design draftsman, preferably in residential, commercial construction, and/or water and wastewater projects.

Professional Designation/Certification/Licenses:

CET, AScT, LEED Certification, ACP, and/or CSWP

Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's License required.

Five years Driver's Abstract required.

Remuneration and Benefits

$80,000.00 to $90,000.00 per year

3 weeks holidays, paid xmas break, 15 Sick Days, 4 Personal days, 3 cultural days

7.6% pension match
