Test Engineer

Our client is an established lighting manufacturer who is looking for an experienced Test Engineer to join their team in Richmond Hill.

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the successful candidate will manage the execution and timely completion of engineering projects by analyzing project scope and determining project specifications; establishing test programs for product investigations; analyzing test programs for adequacy and sequence; examining samples for compliance with company requirements, applicable safety and performance standards. You will also be required to assist in the development of company products, test methods, and test equipment.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Determining project scope related to product safety and performance certification; developing a preliminary plan of investigation; and determining project specification such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analyzing third party lab input, available supplemental data, and product construction. Projects may include travel to conduct or witness tests at NRTL/NVLAP labs.
  • Establishing appropriate test programs by reviewing files and manufacturer's information (BOM), examining samples and applying company requirements and industry standards. Notify upper management of any areas in which the product is not in compliance or of any changes in project scope or specifications in order to comply or exceed minimum requirements.
  • Coordinating laboratory activities by preparing data sheets and instructions to technicians, scheduling and reviewing work of laboratory technicians and engineering support staff, and establishing completion dates. Coordinate administrative aspects of project management.
  • Communicating project status and results within Engineering Department, and to other Departments involved in product launch (Product Development, Marketing, Sales etc.) to ensure established time frames are met.
  • Integrating continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
  • Resolving engineering issues associated with Variation Notices by analyzing and reporting on the acceptability of the variations.
  • Assisting in the development of company requirements. Assist in developing special test methods and test equipment. Analyze test program for adequacy and sequence. May represent company at industry related functions such as seminars and trade shows.
  • Performing preliminary failure identification, functional failure propagation assessments in support of design concepts.
  • Conducting Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) at an early design stage in support of parts classification recommendation.
  • Performing full hazard identification with respect to personnel safety to recommend design changes and/or protection features in support of product standardization / certification and meeting regulatory agency requirements, and work to have them incorporated.
  • Preparing and reviewing regulation / procedural instructions on product safety and certification.
  • Monitoring compliance with regulations/procedural instructions as required.
  • Producing safety related analysis and prepare product and project safety documentation (risk assessments, safety requirements, safety verification, safety cases).
  • Preparing and reviewing product safety issue reports from external customers (when requested).
  • Reporting product safety and certification-related information and issues to the Engineering Manager.
  • Providing regular training to lab personnel in compliance with internal lab accreditations by CBs, working towards achieving new level of qualification which will benefit the Company in terms of time frame for product safety & performance certification.
  • Reviewing product safety notifications and warning.
  • Maintaining good visibility of current activities taking place within design and development, and represent safety concerns at relevant meetings.

Qualifications:

  • University Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or similar
  • 5+ years' experience in Product Testing, Certification Design and Quality.
  • Knowledge of UL/CSA safety standards related to luminaires, Electrical and Building Codes (i.e. Canadian Electrical Code, National Electrical Code, ANSI).
  • Hands on experience in lighting product testing in compliance with ESTAR, DLC and California Energy Commission requirements.
  • Excellent working knowledge in ISO17025 environment.
  • Knowledge of product safety concepts and recognized methods and tools.
  • Have functional knowledge of international safety & quality standards and regulations (e.g. IEC, ISO etc.).
  • Ability to adapt well to fast paced environments, with changing circumstances, direction and strategy.
