Job Summary

The Motive Power Manager is responsible for management and distribution of the locomotive fleet on both CN locomotives and foreign locomotives. The role balances service and operational excellence by fulfilling customer demands while utilizing assets.

Main Responsibilities
People Management

Coach and educate Field Officers on power use and planning

Provide mentoring, coaching and development to new and existing employees

Communicate locomotive utilization goals and targets

Identify opportunities to improve locomotive utilization

Work closely with Field Officers and Mechanical Planners by providing the necessary knowledge and direction to facilitate consistent and effective plans for execution

Drive Productivity in Locomotive Fleet

Cultivate positive working relationships

Understand the customer power requirements at all locations

Drive corporate use plan to maximize Horsepower (HP) use and locomotive type (i.e., ensure AC power is in right lanes and on proper trains to capture their tractive capacity, optimize Distributive Power opportunities)

Complete the forecast for power, determine 36 to 48 hour outlook on locomotive demand

Identify areas of high dwell and engage field of areas of opportunity

Right Size Fleet to Protect Customer Traffic

Review locomotive versus traffic patterns and offerings

Monitor and forecast power flows to divisions and terminals

Anticipate traffic flows to redistribute locomotives to address shortages

Correct power in lane for operation

Asset Use Auditor

Review use of locomotives to identify opportunities to improve asset utilization

Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a modified workweek covering both day and night work with shifts varying from 8 to 12 hours on a 24/7 desk. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and stress

Requirements
Experience

Between 3 to 5 years of relevant railway experience

o Field Experience

Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset

Education/Certification/Designation

High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)

Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline

Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

Knowledge of CN Network, connections, and service flows

Knowledge of Service Reliability Strategy (SRS), Real-Time Business Intelligence (RTBI) and Train Operation Planning and Control (TOPC)

Knowledge of Locomotive Management System (LMS), and Motive Power Planning Tool (OCOMO)

Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word), Business Objects (BO) and Access

Any knowledge for any of the above would be considered as an asset
