About Us

The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) advances the university's teaching and learning mission by providing orientation, training, mentorship, research and innovation opportunities for faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars at Western so that they can create inclusive, high-quality undergraduate and graduate learning experiences for students. The CTL team works to foster and enhance best practices in teaching and learning at Western in partnership with the Faculties, Western Libraries, the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, Office of Indigenous Initiatives, Student Experience, Western International, and Western Technology Services. The CTL advocates for teaching excellence and research on teaching at Western, nationally, and internationally.
The CTL offers certificates, workshops, conferences, communities of practice, courses, consultations, facilitation of workshops and retreats, and online resources at the instructor, departmental, Faculty and institutional-levels. The Centre for Teaching and Learning is recognized nationally and internationally for its research-based practice, comprehensive teaching assistant and international graduate student programs, extended teaching certificate programs, digital learning resources, and as the home of The Canadian Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

Responsibilities

The Associate Director, Digital Learning works to enhance and develop opportunities for online, blended, and technology-enhanced teaching and learning at Western. The Associate Director is responsible for the strategic planning and implementation of programs on online, blended, and technology-enhanced teaching at the CTL and campus-wide, this includes program and curriculum design, facilitation, project management, budget and proposal writing, supervision of members of CTL's Digital Learning team, and collaborating with key partners on digital learning initiatives across campus.

Qualifications

Education:

Master's degree in instructional design, educational technology, curriculum development, education, or a related field.
PhD preferred

Experience:

5 years of progressive experience with online teaching and course development, with expertise in instructional design techniques and outcomes-based curriculum design
3 years of experience working as an educational developer or instructional designer in post-secondary environments
3 years leadership experience, preferably in a university teaching centre or digital learning unit
Extensive experience writing documentation for faculty development and writing grant proposals is preferred
Experience with online teaching at college/university level preferred
Experience with Ontario's institutional quality assurance process and curriculum renewal is preferred
Experience in leading transformational change initiatives at an institutional level preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of adult learning theories and their application, with skills in developing instructional resources and activities in a post-secondary environment
Experience with successfully applying theories of curriculum development to an academic setting to nurture a culture of continuous curricular improvement
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of educational technologies, instructional design theories, models, and teaching strategies suited to an online learning environment
Demonstrated knowledge, experience and practice in training, program development and one-on-one consultations
Experience with Learning Management Systems; knowledge of Brightspace is preferred
Demonstrated knowledge of project management and the ability to manage multiple projects, people, and schedules within an academic context
Ability to quickly research, evaluate, and recommend the viability of new technologies and innovations in Digital Learning
Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of faculty members with different disciplinary backgrounds while establishing proactive, positive consulting relationships
Ability to apply group facilitation techniques to meet outcomes of workshop and curriculum sessions
Ability to work in a team environment at multiple organizational levels within Western, with colleagues from diverse backgrounds to build positive and strong relationships at all levels of the organization
Proven ability to interact with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
Effective presentation skills to both small, large, and diverse audiences
Collaborative leadership and management skills with a track record of building and leading a team of professional high performing staff
