Summary
As a member of the peopleCare team, the Registered Practical Nurse ensures all aspects of health & wellness services within the facility meet and exceed the needs and expectations of our residents. This position ensures the effective and efficient delivery of health & wellness services to our residents. The Registered Practical Nurse will ensure the residents enjoyment and health and well-being within the scope of their professional practice.
The Registered Practical Nurse is responsible to the Director of Health & Wellness and the development of a strong relationships that will deliver optimal service to residents and families based on RHRA / peopleCare / professional standards

Responsibilities and Duties
1. Provide professional nursing care to all residents and supervise care given by the Resident Care Co-ordinators.
2. Assess all resident needs and health status.
3. Work closely with the Director of Health and Wellness, Attending Physicians, Food Services and Leisure /Recreation.
4. Provide directions and supervision of all Care staff.
5. Assess residents' conditions by recognizing signs and symptoms and where necessary initiates remedial health measures.
6. Contacting resident's attending physician when there is a change in resident's physical or mental condition.
7. Responsible to ensure safekeeping of drug and narcotic keys during tour of duty.
8. Responsible for administration of medications and treatments as ordered by resident's physician within his/her limitations.
9. Oversees the Resident Care Co-ordinators during medication administration.
10. Deals courteously with staff, residents, residents' families and visitors.
11. Responsible for assisting with admission and discharge of residents.
12. Maintain liaison with families of residents.
13. Ensures medical records are maintained.
14. Completes monthly weights and blood pressures on all residents.
15. Participates in the staff development, quality assurance, safety, environment and infection control programs.
16. Knowledgeable of the Residential Tenancies Act.
17. Ensures nursing documentation is complete as per College of Nurses' Nursing Documentation guidelines.
18. Assists with arranging transportation for residents.
19. Answers call bells and assist where necessary.
20. Orders medications from Pharmacy as per Doctor's orders.
21. Receives medications and storing medications safely.
22. Serve and supervise at meals - assist with resident satisfaction.
23. Adhere to all established policies and procedures.
24. Complete incident reports and assessments where necessary.
25. Supervising resident's personal hygiene and bathing as per schedule, or assisting when necessary.
26. Assist residents with ambulation when necessary.
27. Emergency nursing care.
28. Assists to ensure a resident care plan is up to date.
29. Aware of role and responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
30. Ability to hire, discipline and schedule / re-schedule Resident Care Co-ordinators.

Qualifications:
1. Current Certificate of Competence as a Registered Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
2. Good physical and mental health and free from communicable diseases.
3. Knowledge of the Nursing practices and nursing diagnosis.
4. Certified in Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and First Aid.
5. Good communication and leadership skills.
6. Willingness to update and keep current their knowledge of changing regulations, practices and procedures as required by the College of Nurses.
7. Valid Smart Serve.

Working Conditions:
1. Sitting for long periods at a desk for computer/typing work.
2. Standing for long periods of time.
3. Walking short distances and up/down staircases.
4. Typing and/or use of a computer keyboard proficiently.
5. Pulling/pushing/lifting to open and/or relocate binders, carts, etc. up to 10lbs.
6. Reading/seeing documentation both in paper format and on a computer screen for long periods of time.
7. Hearing differences in phone ring tones and/or in fire system horns or alerts for emergency response purposes.
8. Speaking/communicating in front of audiences and with individuals who may have impairments and disabilities.
9. Bending, kneeling, providing walking support for residents in the provision of resident care where required.
10. Dexterity required opening pouches/blister packs, inserting test strips into glucometers, etc.

RESPONSIBILITIES TO HEALTH AND SAFETY:

1. Is a competent Worker as defined by the Occupational Health & Safety Act.

2. Is knowledgeable of the responsibilities of a Resident Coordinator, and follows all health and safety policies and procedures. Completes all safety training as required by peopleCare Inc.

3. Is alert to, remedies, or promptly reports all actual or potential hazardous situations to the Director of Health & Wellness of the home, and/or Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee.

4. Ensures that all reported injuries/illnesses are treated promptly and documented according to policy.

5. Must be knowledgeable of home fire and disaster plan.
