The Field and Operations Chemist applies scientific expertise to create new products, improve existing products and support existing business operations.

The Chemist conducts research and analysis in support of industrial operations, product and process development, quality control, environmental control, and other applications. The Chemist consults with external clients, as well as providing support to various departments within Clean Harbors. Provides field assistance in analysis and operations.

  • Safety and Compliance: Responsible for identifying, assessing, and controlling, physical, health and environmental hazards in the workplace and in the field. Ensures that potential safety issues related to the project, the environment, the process and the product are considered at all stages (lab, report and onsite). Evaluate laboratory safety procedures to ensure compliance with standards or to make improvements as needed.
  • Compliance: Generate and maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) in accordance with the Global Harmonized System (GHS), while understanding the federal and provincial/state legislations regarding the occupational use of individual product components.
  • Research: Utilizes a high level of expertise in research to manage the development cycle of new products (from conceptualization to product launch), applications and/or methodologies. As well as continuously improving existing products to meet client needs and expectations.
  • Laboratory: Analyzes organic and inorganic compounds to determine chemical and/or physical properties, composition, structure, relationships, or reactions using chemical and instrumental techniques. Critically assesses experimental data and provide interpretation of results. Exercises technical discretion in the design, execution and interpretation of experiments that contribute to project strategies and goals. Performs non-routine analysis of samples using a variety of analytical instruments, while following prescribed procedures, with the ability to troubleshoot and address client problems and offer recommendations based on cost, efficiency and customer requirements and concerns.
  • Quality Control: Implements, maintains and audits all aspects of the management, testing, calibration and reporting of results, to ensure compliance with client and company requirements.
  • Collaboration: Works closely with process chemists and control engineers on site to ensure that our products are being used properly to provide maximum cleaning efficiency.
  • Marketing: Provides the marketing and sales teams with promotional materials regarding specific products or applications, assists with the development of marketing stratagems, monitors and analyzes market trends and competitor activity to ensure products remain competitive.
  • Project Management: Writes project proposals, analytical and technical reports, peer reviewed articles, patents and industry standards for processes, facilities, products, or tests.
  • Networking: Attends technical conferences, symposia, training programs and meetings to further knowledge of the industry, applications, methods and chemicals.
  • Consulting: Meets with clients and Clean Harbors sales representatives to provide technical support to optimize job planning, ensuring customer satisfaction by the discussing customer needs and requests with the Chemical Cleaning Project Manager and when required will assist in the scoping and quoting of projects/jobs and/or contracts. Directs, coordinates, and/or advises personnel in chemical procedures to be used in field applications, and supervise field applications where applicable.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned from time to time by management and will be required by the needs of the Clean Harbors business.
  • Is eligible for the designation P.Chem.
  • Class 5 and be able to lift up to 50lbs
  • MS Office experience (excel, outlook, word)
  • A B.Sc. in Chemistry required and Eligible for the P.Chem Designation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • And the ability to travel withing BC, AB, SK
