About us: Financial Services is a department within the Chief Financial Officer portfolio. The academic goals and objectives of the University are supported through excellent financial management, and effective and appropriate use of all financial resources. The University's decentralized management model places financial management responsibility within every division of the University as well as within Financial Services. Within Financial Services, the Student Receivables & General Accounting Office is responsible for policies, procedures and systems for both student and general accounting processes on the University's student and financial systems; administration of daily incoming deposits, accounts receivable including student fee billing and collections; banking; third party sponsor billing; awards disbursement and student refunding; fee revenue, fiscal year end and audit; and tax reporting. The busy office works with both central and divisional offices across the University, federated colleges, and Toronto School of Theology.

Your opportunity: The incumbent is responsible for administration of daily incoming deposits, assembling, balancing, endorsing, and documenting bank deposits and processes on FIS; liaising with divisional awards staff to facilitate payments and resolve account and payment issues; recording award cancellations and related T4A adjustments; and other general accounting duties. The incumbent is responsible for account reconciliation, identifying and resolving financial discrepancies, recording accounting entries, and verifying the accuracy and completeness of information on ROSI, FICA, and FIS.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Receiving, verifying, and receipting deposits from multiple departments in the University
  • Identifying and analyzing data discrepancies and taking necessary actions to correct errors
  • Verifying that supporting documentation is attached to financial records before processing
  • Liaising with divisional awards staff to facilitate payments and resolve account and payment issues
  • Responding to enquiries within the defined scope of the role and redirecting as appropriate
  • Reconciling accounts
  • Other duties of the General Accounting Administrator include: Providing back up to A/R clerk position and SRAO Administrator as needed Other duties relating to University business as assigned

Essential Qualifications:

  • Advanced college diploma (3+ years) or higher in Financial Accounting/Bookkeeping or other related field or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
  • Minimum three (3) years of recent and related financial experience in a university or similar environment
  • Demonstrated related experience with U of T's Administrative Management System (e.g. FIS), or equivalent systems.
  • Experience maintaining and organizing administrative and financial records.
  • Solid understanding of accounting, accounts receivable, and internal controls.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, SharePoint, Teams and Outlook).
  • Demonstrated high level of organization and attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy under pressure of deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise tact, good judgment and diplomacy
  • Knowledge of the University's financial procedures and guidelines, or other similar procedures.

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Related experience in a university environment or higher educational institution
  • Previous experience in a high-volume processing environment
  • Demonstrated experience with developing and implementing automated solutions
  • Knowledge of SAP or ROSI

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone: USW Pay Band 09 -- $65,407 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $83,646. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
