Description: About us: University Planning (UP) operates within the larger umbrella of University Planning, Design & Construction (UPDC), which integrates and coordinates areas of planning, project development, design and engineering, space management, and project management to deliver projects for the betterment of our campuses. With over 215 buildings of which over 50 are either listed or designated as being of historic significance on 284 Hectares (700 acres) of land, 1.6 million gross square metres (17.1 million gross square feet) of facilities, space and holdings making the University of Toronto one of the largest landowners in the Greater Toronto Area. University Planning is responsible for tri-campus master planning, visioning and planning of major capital projects and renovations, managing the development planning approvals process, and liaising with key stakeholders both internal and external to the University. UP provides direct assistance to all departments, divisions and faculties planning for capital projects, space utilization studies, divisional master plans, feasibility studies, heritage and public realm projects. The department is engaged in a range of activities that impact the physical character of the campuses through guiding the relationship of the University's buildings and open spaces. UP leads the planning for appropriate accommodation of the University's teaching, research activities, and housing needs, to be an asset in the broader urban community. The UP team plays a critical role in shaping the physical experience of the University campuses in their unique contexts.

Your opportunity: As a Senior Planning Associate, you will be engaged on a diverse range of projects varying in scale, typology and complexity. You will play a key role in the development of university sites, from pre-planning and feasibility stages to space programming and analysis, and visioning new models for various building environments. You will assist in preparing the University's submission to the Council of Ontario Universities for its Triennial Inventory of Physical Facilities of Ontario Universities. You will develop 3D renderings and massing studies, test space layouts and functional plans, develop graphic presentations and engage in client meetings. You will play a key role in organizing departmental and project information and making recommendations for improvements. You will also have the opportunity to oversee small-scale capital projects including document preparation, stakeholder meetings, and governance approvals. You will report to Planning Staff and the Managing Director while providing support and guidance to other Planning Associates at UP. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Producing technical documentation and CAD drawings for approval
  • Creating CAD drawings based on existing paper drawings and on-site measurements
  • Developing viable design solutions and artistic renderings
  • Preparing concept plans, schematics, renderings, architectural work drawings and project proposal outline
  • Drafting progress reports for project leader's review
  • Analyzing drawing standards and efficiencies and recommending changes for improvement
  • Implementing plans and process improvements for departmental standards and activities

Essential Qualifications:

  • Advanced College Diploma (3 years) or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
  • Minimum six years experience with graphic design / architecture / planning, preferably in a post-secondary environment
  • Strong software skills including the Office Suite, AutoCAD, BIM, Adobe Creative Suite, 3-dimensional (3D) software such as Sketchup
  • Preparing 3D and other architectural drawings / graphic material to assist in the physical planning, design and renovation of spaces
  • Producing artistic renderings of proposals, conceptual plans and functional layouts, including the layout and design for reports and publications
  • Data gathering and research, data analysis, and presenting findings / recommendations
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
