We are hiring a dynamic and experienced Assistant Financial Controller at ValPay to join our growing team in Saint-Laurent, Montreal!

The Assistant Financial Controller will work closely with and report to the Head of Finance, supporting day-to-day financial operations across a group of acquired companies. This role will focus on coordinating and executing core accounting tasks, including period-end close processes, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting. The Assistant Financial Controller will ensure accuracy and compliance in financial records; help maintain internal controls and assist in preparing analysis for decision-making. In addition, this individual will support the Head of Finance on various finance initiatives and collaborate with accounting teams and subsidiary company leaders to ensure smooth financial operations across the portfolio.

The successful candidate will be based anywhere within a commutable distance of our office in Saint-Laurent, Montreal, working in an on-site work model!

What your day will look like:

  • Track and monitor budgets across multiple portfolio companies, ensuring accurate reporting and adherence to financial plans
  • Process and oversee accounts payable and receivable activities, ensuring timely payments and proper record-keeping
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting by preparing journal entries, reconciling accounts, and assisting with variance analysis
  • Prepare and submit billing and invoicing documentation and respond to any vendor or client inquiries related to financial transactions
  • Assist in the preparation of internal reports for the Portfolio Head of Finance, including P&L summaries, cash flow statements, and ad-hoc analysis
  • Maintain general ledger integrity by ensuring all entries are accurate and comply with internal controls and accounting policies
  • Coordinate with external auditors and help compile documentation during financial reviews or audits
  • Support the implementation of best practices in finance operations across portfolio companies, including system improvements and process optimizations
  • Liaise with the corporate finance team and act as a key point of contact for day-to-day finance needs across the portfolio

Financial Reporting:

  • Lead and organize the annual statutory audits and ensure all filings are complete
  • Help organize and track progress for annual audit and statutory filing requirements, working closely with internal teams and external auditors
  • Coordinate and support the monthly financial close process for portfolio companies, including journal entries, reconciliations, and accruals
  • Prepare and compile timely and accurate financial reports on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis in accordance with corporate standards
  • Assist in the review of accounting activities, including tax filings, statutory compliance, and adherence to local regulations
  • Ensure consistency with corporate accounting policies and help identify and document any differences with local statutory requirements
  • Support the maintenance of strong internal financial controls by following established procedures and flagging potential improvements
  • Contribute to streamlining internal reporting processes, identifying ways to enhance accuracy and efficiency
  • Prepare audit support documentation and assist in coordinating responses during corporate and statutory audits

Financial Systems:

  • Support the NetSuite rollout activities to Portfolio companies by ensuring data integrity 
  • Conduct situational assessments, identify gaps and opportunities for automation, make recommendations, and direct the implementation of such changes as required to improve financial systems and related processes

Integration Support:

  • Integration activities include ERP system implementation, account mapping, rollout of ValPay reporting requirements and governance standards
  • Establish and monitor monthly reporting cadence
  • Review all deliverables for data integrity, quality, and accuracy
  • Identify discrepancies between acquired company accounting policies and Valsoft corporate policies
  • Remediate discrepancies by revaluing accounts, engineering and implementing go-forward reporting processes
  • Calculate and monitor deferred acquisition payment liabilities
  • Creation of a bottom-up forecast in partnership with the acquired business
  • Rollout and application of the Valsoft KPI management framework

About you:

  • A qualified financial accountant (ACCA) with at least a bachelor's degree or above in Accounting, Finance, Economics or similar is essential; CPA preferred
  • 3+ years of experience in a similar role
  • Ability to manage risks by ensuring that effective and efficient internal controls are in place without compromising operational efficiency and flexibility
  • Strong understanding of financial processes, with the ability to navigate and resolve conflicting goals of diverse stakeholders
  • Extensive knowledge and skill in multiple disciplines to be able to support business integration activities effectively, and a capacity to understand and interpret conflicting goals and needs of diverse groups
  • Ability to manage risks by ensuring that effective and efficient internal controls are in place without compromising operational efficiency and flexibility
  • Fast learner and adaptable – time management skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Working knowledge of Oracle NetSuite ERP (or similar) is considered an asset
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in (or working knowledge of) data tools such as Power Query, Power BI, Excel Power Pivot, or similar platforms to improve reporting automation and data analysis
  • Ability to visualize efficient processes and implement them
  • Excellent organizational skills and time management
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Excel
  • Expertise in streamlining and implementing efficient financial processes
  • Prior experience managing a finance team is advantageous
  • Fluent in the English language, both written and verbal, is essential
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada
