Job Summary
Reporting to the Manager of Support and Navigation, the Clinical Therapist plays a key role in supporting the emotional well-being of individuals living with dementia and their care partners. The successful candidate will provide trauma-informed, person-centred, and culturally responsive counselling services in individual and group settings.
Working collaboratively with clients, families, community partners, and internal teams, the Clinical Therapist will support individuals living with dementia and their care partners as they navigate the emotional, psychological, and practical impacts of the disease. In addition to providing therapeutic services, the successful candidate will lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of a pilot counselling program for people living with dementia, offered in both English and French, helping to expand access to specialized dementia-focused supports across New Brunswick.
This is a part-time position (three days per week). Services may be delivered in person, virtually, or through a hybrid approach based on client needs and program requirements.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide individual, family, and group counselling services to people living with dementia and their care partners.
- Conduct assessments and develop individualized support and treatment plans based on client needs and goals.
- Utilize evidence-informed therapeutic approaches to support client well-being and quality of life.
- Deliver counselling services in person, virtually, or through a hybrid model, as appropriate.
- Develop, implement, pilot, and evaluate a dementia-specific counselling program for people living with dementia in both English and French.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical documentation in accordance with professional and organizational standards.
- Collaborate with clients, families, internal teams, and community partners to support coordinated service delivery.
- Participate in case consultations, team meetings, and interdisciplinary discussions as appropriate.
- Contribute to the development of educational resources, tools, and supports for clients and care partners.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with community partners and stakeholders.
- Represent New Brunswick on national working groups, committees, and collaborative initiatives as requested.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and maintain current knowledge of best practices in dementia care and counselling.
- Uphold ethical and professional standards in accordance with applicable regulatory and professional requirements.
- Assist with administrative duties and organizational initiatives as required.
- Travel within New Brunswick as required.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in counselling, Counselling Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
- Current professional registration or licensure, or eligibility for registration, in New Brunswick (e.g., Licensed Counselling Therapist or Registered Social Worker).
- Minimum of two years of counselling experience, preferably within community-based, non-profit, mental health, or social service settings.
- Experience providing counselling services in both virtual and in-person environments.
- Training and experience in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and other evidence-informed therapeutic approaches.
- Demonstrated understanding of the impact of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias on individuals, families, and care partners.
- Experience working with older adults, caregivers, and individuals experiencing significant life transitions is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed, strengths-based, and person-centred practices.
- Strong clinical assessment, communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information with professionalism and discretion.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team.
- Experience facilitating groups, workshops, or educational sessions is considered an asset.
- Strong community awareness and the ability to develop collaborative partnerships.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and experience using electronic documentation systems.
- Must carry, or be eligible to obtain, professional liability insurance in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Bilingualism in English and French is required.
- Possession of a valid New Brunswick driver's licence and access to reliable transportation.
- Ability to travel within the region and work occasional evenings as required.
- The successful candidate must provide and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check as a condition of employment.
