JOB PURPOSE

Provide exceptional leadership and clinical expertise within the Emergency Department, ensuring the highest standards of patient care and staff performance. The incumbent will demonstrate strong leadership abilities, motivate and mentor staff, and exhibit excellent communication and problem-solving skills. Responsibilities include maintaining clinical competencies, staying current with nursing trends, developing patient care assignments, and collaborating with management and clinical nurse educators on education and resource utilization. The role also involves supporting staff, promoting a professional practice environment, and ensuring compliance with privacy legislation and health authority policies. This position reports to the appropriate Critical Care Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Nursing or eligible for same
  • Active registration within the province of New Brunswick
  • At least 5 years of clinical nursing experience within the Emergency Department in the last seven years
  • Demonstrated strong leadership abilities. Must be able to motivate staff and have excellent positive communication skills
  • Demonstrate ability as a role model/mentor/leader within the interdisciplinary team
  • Demonstrate ability to incorporate nursing theory and evidence-based practice into the provision of patient care
  • Demonstrate competence in clinical expertise in relevant clinical area
  • Demonstrate ability to support, adapt and facilitate change within the health network
  • Demonstrate team building skills and ability to evaluate work performance
  • Good previous work and attendance record
  • Mentally and physically capable of performing the duties. Able to physically manage assignments in all areas of the Emergency Department
  • Previous experience in supervisory or managerial roles is recommended but not required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES

  • Attend workshops and in-services as applicable and relay information to other staff members
  • Maintain certification of clinical skills required on the unit
  • Maintain an awareness of recent trends and issues related to the nursing profession and Emergency nursing care
  • Strengthen professional self-development through relevant continuing education
  • Motivate others
  • Consistently exhibit excellent and positive communication skills. Be a good listener and consider all points of view.

  • Delegate tasks appropriately and prioritize care
  • Develop daily patient care assignments based on patient needs, continuity of care and staff development
  • Participates in orientation of new staff
  • Provide support and guidance to staff with decision making
  • Collaborate with Nurse Manager and Critical Care Educator regarding the need for staff education, counselling and conflict resolution
  • Participate in performance appraisals
  • Act as a role model to promote a professional practice environment and high standard of care
  • Work collaboratively with Nurse Manager to ensure appropriate utilization of finances within the unit
  • Maintain awareness of the need for cost containment and relay information to staff (i.e.. suggest alternate material and human resources that are more cost effective)
  • Coordinate the maintenance and repair of equipment in collaboration with Nurse Manager
  • Demonstrate adherence to all privacy legislation and Health Authority policies to ensure all confidential patient, business, financial and employee information is accessed on a need to know basis only (for required job duties) and is disclosed only to those authorized to receive it.
  • Assist Nurse Manager with quality improvement initiatives and collection of relevant data to support nursing in the care of patients.
