Who we are:

The Department of Natural Resources is seeking an individual to join the Crown Lands Branch, as the Provincial Trails Coordinator, located in Fredericton.

The Department of Natural Resources is responsible for protecting and managing the forests, fish, and wildlife, and for overseeing the development of mineral resources in New Brunswick. The Crown Lands Branch is responsible for the administration and management of Crown lands across New Brunswick, ensuring responsible use and sustainable development. The branch oversees land tenure and land use authorizations supporting a wide range of commercial, recreational, and resource-based activities on Crown lands, including the management of the Former Railway Line and other corridors for the development and management of a recreational trail network.

What you will do:

As a member of the Approvals Section and reporting to the section Manager, the selected candidate will be responsible for coordinating the development of both motorized and non-motorized trails on Crown lands with the objective to ensure the safe, sustainable and strategically located public recreational trail opportunities that maximizes the economic, social and environmental benefits to the province.

Key responsibilities:

• Developing and maintaining a positive working relationship with the main trail user groups and relevant staff from other departments with similar trail mandates;
• Creating and maintaining Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data to support activities related to motorized trail applications;
• Participating as Chairperson of the Provincial Trail Planning Committee, with responsibility for agendas and minutes and related liaison functions, including trail application processes for development, use and maintenance of all trail networks;
• Providing functions associated with the operation of the Trail Management Trust Fund including all processes and protocols as established by the Minister, necessary for the disbursement of funds in accordance with the Off-Road Vehicle Act;
• Participating in process improvement related initiatives;
• Working with project managers and other branch staff to ensure trail priorities are met and clients receive timely responses to trail applications, including making recommendations with respect to policies, procedures, regulation and/or legislation, as they relate to Crown land use and trails;
• Performing other related duties as required.

Essential Qualifications:

• A University degree in Forestry, Engineering, Recreational Studies, Environmental Studies, Geography, or Planning.
• A minimum of five (5) years of progressively more responsible experience in land management, resource management, or outdoor recreation such as planning, development, management and delivery of nature-based recreational programs, tourism products, or infrastructure.
• A minimum of one (1) year of experience working collaboratively with multiple organizations.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Written and spoken competence in English is required. Please state your language capability on your application.

Asset Qualification(s):

• Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping software.

Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

Wage: Pay Band 5 - $68,276 to $95,342 annually

Operational Requirement(s):

• Must be prepared to: travel throughout the province as required; and possess a valid class 5 driver licence as issued by the Province of New Brunswick, or equivalent.

Work environment:

• Office location: Hugh John Flemming Forestry Centre, 1350 Regent Street, Fredericton, New Brunswick.
• Work hours: Monday to Friday / 8:15 to 4:30; 36.25 hours per week.
