Who we are:

The Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries is seeking an individual to join the Crop Sector Development Branch as an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Weed Specialist, located in Fredericton.

The Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries is responsible for supporting growth, competitiveness and sustainability of these three sectors. We work collaboratively with industry, producers, researchers, indigenous communities, government partners and other stakeholders to support and advance opportunities in the primary and value-added agriculture, aquaculture and fishery sectors. As part of these initiatives, the Crop Sector Development Branch provides leadership, technical expertise, and advisory services to promote a sustainable, innovative, and competitive crop industry throughout the province.

What you will do:

As a member of the Crop Sector Development team, reporting to the section manager, the selected candidate will be responsible for the following.

• Planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating pest management strategies.
• Evaluating and demonstrating new weed management technologies.
• Providing expert advisory services on weed management to producers, staff, and all crop sectors.
• Representing the department on various national, regional, and provincial committees and associations.
• Developing and delivering educational and reference materials on pest management and related topics, including presentations, newsletters, articles, fact sheets, selection guides, and website materials.
• Developing, implementing and monitoring pest management policies and management programs related to horticulture and field crops.
• Performing other related duties, as assigned.

Your attitude, skills and interests are just as important as your area of study. We are looking for diverse backgrounds that bring a combination of the following.

Essential Qualifications:

• A Master`s degree in Science with specialization in agriculture and focus on integrated pest management, particularly in weed management; and a minimum of eight (8) years of directly related work experience.

OR

• A Bachelor degree in Science with specialization in agriculture and focus on integrated pest management, particularly in weed management; and a minimum of ten (10) years of directly related work experience.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Written and spoken competence in English is required. Please state your language capability on your application.

Note: The successful candidate must be eligible for membership in the New Brunswick Institute of Agrologists and membership must be attained within six (6) months of appointment.

Asset Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate experience in one or more of the following: technology transfer; networking; field research trials for evaluation and demonstration; working with agricultural producers and producer groups. Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration

• Knowledge of research methodologies, principles and practices;
• Written communication, including policies, analytical reports, proposals, and briefing materials;
• Presentation skills;
• Planning and organizing skills.

Wage: Agrologist 3 - $75,898.16 to $103,884.56 annually

Note: In the event that this competition poses difficulties in recruiting a qualified candidate, a covering off appointment at a lower level may be made. In that case, candidates with less than the required related years of experience may also be considered.

Operational Requirements:

Must be prepared to: travel within and outside of the province, including overnight stays, as required; work outside of the regular work hours, as required; work in agricultural environments which may include a variety of terrain and weather conditions; possess a valid class 5 driver licence as issued by the Province of New Brunswick, or equivalent; and possess or successfully complete Pesticide Applicator Certification within six (6) months of commencement.

Work environment:

• Office location: Hugh John Flemming Forestry Centre, 1350 Regent Street, Fredericton, New Brunswick.
• Work hours: Monday to Friday / 8:15 to 4:30; 36.25 hours per week.
