Meridia Recruitment has partnered with the Town of Antigonish to recruit an Active Living Coordinator to join their Community Development team on a 12-month contract, starting in mid-November, an official date to be determined once the candidate is selected.
Role Description
Reporting to the Manager of Parks and Recreation, the Active Living Coordinator will play a key role in promoting physical activity, recreation, and community wellbeing throughout the local area. This is a highly visible and hands-on position that combines program development, staff leadership, community partnership building, and public engagement.
The Active Living Coordinator will lead the implementation of the Town's Active Living Strategy while supporting recreation initiatives designed to reduce barriers to participation and encourage residents to live more active lifestyles. This role offers significant autonomy and variety, with opportunities to work directly within the community, build meaningful relationships, and facilitate programs that make a lasting impact.
Your responsibilities will include:

  • Oversee the implementation, evaluation, and ongoing development of the Town of Antigonish Active Living Strategy and Municipal Physical Activity Leadership plan.
  • Coordinate and support active living and recreation programs serving youth, families, adults, and seniors.
  • Lead the planning and delivery of the Town's Multi-Sport programming, including annual preparation, program oversight, and evaluation.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and support Multi-Sport Leaders and other casual recreation staff.
  • Coordinate annual funding applications and reporting requirements related to active living initiatives.
  • Support the continued success of community Sport and other community recreation programs.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community organizations, schools, health partners, and recreation stakeholders.
  • Develop and promote initiatives that improve access to recreation opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities.
  • Support recreation-related policy development, including initiatives focused on equity, diversity, inclusion, and affordable access.
  • Collaborate with the Town's Marketing, Communications, and Events team to promote programs and initiatives.
  • Coordinate public education and awareness campaigns related to active living and recreation.
  • Serve as a liaison with provincial and community partners to advance recreation and wellness initiatives.
  • Maintain program registration systems, participant records, and related administrative functions.

Your Qualifications
The ideal candidate is an energetic and community-minded professional who enjoys connecting with people, developing programs, and creating opportunities that encourage active lifestyles. Success in this role comes from taking initiative, building strong relationships, and balancing hands-on program delivery with planning and administration.
Your qualifications include:

  • Degree or diploma in Human Kinetics, Recreation, Community Development, Education, Health Education, Communications or a related field and three years' experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience coordinating programs, events, recreation initiatives, or community-based services.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and take initiative.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation.
  • Ability to obtain required background checks and certifications including a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check, First Aid/CPR certification and Drivers' Abstract.

Assets include:

  • Experience in recreation, community development, education, health promotion, or municipal environments.
  • Experience supervising staff or volunteers.
  • Event planning or program development experience.
  • Communications and public engagement experience.
  • Knowledge of the local recreation spaces.
