ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The Surgical Services Program of NL Health Services – Eastern Urban Zone invites applications for two (2) full-time General Surgeons within the Division of General Surgery in St. John's, NL. Both positions are based across Health Sciences Centre and St. Clare's Mercy Hospital. The two positions are:
- General Surgeon — Laparoscopic Abdominal Wall Hernia Repair (1 position)
- General Surgeon — Hepatobiliary (HPB) Surgery (1 position)
Candidates are asked to indicate their area of subspecialty interest when applying.
The successful candidates will join the General Surgery Division currently consisting of 15 surgeons, providing comprehensive surgical care to patients across Newfoundland and Labrador. Each position will have access to main operating room time, clinic time, and minor procedure time — on average two (2) OR days per month with weekly clinic and minor procedures. Access to endoscopy time is not guaranteed. On-call expectations are distributed equitably across active divisional members.
The successful candidates must have a strong interest in their respective subspecialty area and in staying abreast of advances in that field. Candidates will be expected to pursue a strong academic career and participate actively in the Division's academic, research, and education initiatives, including teaching and supervision of undergraduate students and postgraduate trainees. Opportunities for academic appointment are available through the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Medical Degree (MD) from a recognized institution
- Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Certification in General Surgery (or equivalent)
- Fellowship or advanced training in one of the following subspecialty areas at an accredited institution:
— Laparoscopic Abdominal Wall Hernia Repair, or
— Hepatobiliary (HPB) Surgery - Strong research interest and/or advanced degree
- Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador (www.cpsnl.ca)
- Must satisfy credentialing and privilege requirements of NL Health Services including a satisfactory criminal record check and vulnerable sector check
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide comprehensive general surgery services with a subspecialty focus in either Laparoscopic Abdominal Wall Hernia Repair or Hepatobiliary (HPB) Surgery across Health Sciences Centre and St. Clare's Mercy Hospital
- Conduct operating room cases, outpatient clinics, and minor procedures
- Participate in on-call coverage distributed equitably among divisional members
- Contribute actively to the Division's academic, research, and education initiatives
- Supervise and teach undergraduate students and postgraduate trainees
- Work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary surgical team
- Support person- and family-centered care; promote patient and worker safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks, and implementing improvements
REMUNERATION
Remuneration is Fee-For-Service in accordance with the Medical Care Plan (MCP) Fee Schedule.
