Job Summary
Reporting to the Provincial Public Health Surveillance Manager within the Population Health Assessment, Surveillance and Epidemiology (PHASE) core program of Provincial Public Health within NLHS, the Epidemiologist is a key member of the PHASE team. The PHASE team is one of six core programs within NLHS’ Provincial Public Health structure and is led by a dyad (Director and Medical Officer of Health) and a Surveillance Manager.

The PHASE program collaborates with a wide range of partners within provincial public health, NLHS and externally to provide surveillance reporting, communicable disease outbreak support, projection and modeling, and data and evaluation services – all delivered through an equity-focused lens that ensures our surveillance activities meaningfully reflect and respond to the diverse communities we serve.

Job Qualifications

Education
Master’s degree in Epidemiology or a Masters degree in a related health discipline with applied epidemiologic experience.

Experience
Minimum of three years of experience in health care/public health within the last five is required.
Experience working with population-level datasets (e.g., communicable disease surveillance, administrative health data, national survey data, etc.) is required
Experience with research software and Microsoft software is required.
Experience with data analysis using a coding language; R/R Studio preferred and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications considered an asset.

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)Knowledge of public health practices, standards and surveillance principles
Knowledge of outbreak investigation methods and communicable disease control principles and non-CDC surveillance knowledge are required skills of a public health epidemiologist
Knowledge of statistical analysis techniques and the appropriate application of these approaches and the ability to conduct such analysis.
Demonstrated knowledge in the design, implementation and/or evaluation of surveillance systems.
Demonstrated knowledge of statistical and data management.
Demonstrated ability to manage multi surveillance projects.
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with staff at all levels within the organization, both verbally and in writing.
Demonstrated ability to work independently under pressure, highly motivated and in collaboration with others.
Ability to analyze and interpret data, develop recommendations and communicate effectively.
Experience translating complex epidemiologic information for non-technical audiences.
