The Department of Natural Resources is seeking an individual to join the Forest Operations and Development Branch, Forest Nursery Operations, as a seasonal Operations Worker, located in Island View.
Who we are: The Kingsclear Forest Nursery currently grows and ships approximately 24 million tree seedlings annually, for reforestation planting programs on Crown land and private woodlots in New Brunswick. The current annual tree species produced include white spruce, black spruce, red spruce and pine species. The nursery, which has been in operation for more than 45 years and covers approximately 90 hectares, includes 9 growing complexes, 101 greenhouses, 13 outdoor crop holding areas, and has recently undergone a greenhouse modernization project that includes a new 110,000 square foot expansion.
What you will do: As a member of the Forest Nursery Operations team, and reporting to the Assistant Operations Coordinator, this position is responsible for the following:
- Coordinating and monitoring the duties of casual employees during seeding operations.
- Assisting with sorting and weeding container seedlings, laying out seeded trays in the greenhouses, and laying out and preparing seedlings for overwintering.
- Assisting with the mechanized seeding line, including manually placing seeded liners in trays, operating a forklift to load seeded trays onto delivery vehicles, hand-cleaning dirty seed, cleaning of seed machine and surrounding work area, and collecting data for crop germination and shipping heights.
- Grading and marking poor quality trays in greenhouses.
- Assisting with sampling procedures for shipping counts.
- Providing greenhouse sanitation/maintenance, including cleaning water booms, nozzles, greenhouses and equipment, painting greenhouses, and cleaning seeding trays.
- Performing other related duties, as required.
Essential Qualifications:
- Successful completion of grade ten (10).
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience performing labor work, including the use of tools and equipment.
- An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Written and spoken competence in English is required. Please state your language capability on your application.

Asset Qualifications: Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.
- A minimum of one (1) year (two (2) growing seasons) of related experience in a forest nursery environment.
- Experience operating seeding equipment and light machinery (i.e. small forklifts, mini loaders).

Operational Requirement(s):
- Work a 40-hour week.
- Work extended hours and weekends when necessary to meet operational requirements.
- Work with a high degree of independence and judgment.
- Travel within the province, as required.
- Operate various vehicles, light machinery, specialized equipment and tools.
- Perform physically demanding tasks.
- Follow established safety protocols.
- Successfully complete required training and certifications.
- Possess a valid class 5 driver licence as issued by the Province of New Brunswick, or equivalent.
Work environment:
Location: 3732 Route 2, Island View, New Brunswick.
Work hours: Monday to Friday / 8:00 to 4:30; 40 hours per week.
Seasonal position: Approximately February to November (based on operational requirements).
Salary: Operations Worker I - $26.87 per hour (based on a 40-hour week)
