The Mactaquac Generating Station began generating electricity in 1968. Since the 1980s, concrete portions of the hydro station have been affected by a chemical reaction called alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR). The reaction causes the concrete to swell and crack and has required substantial annual maintenance and repairs. NB Power is proposing a project to ensure the station can operate to its intended 100-year lifespan with a modified approach to maintenance and adjusting and replacing equipment and concrete overtime.
As part of the Mactaquac Life Achievement Project (MLAP), the Turbine and Generator, Mechanical Engineer V will be responsible for overseeing and executing technical and project-related activities for MLAP Turbine and Generator Works. This includes reviewing contractor and vendor submissions, supporting project management functions, and participating in site and quality inspections.
Key functions include:
- Long-Term Planning - provide strategic insight and support for hydroelectric generation unit outages, overhauls and upgrade work. (e.g. Hydro generator and turbine units, station service systems, powerhouse cranes, emergency diesel generators, high pressure oil lift systems, motor control centers (MCCs), high voltage switchgear, balance of plant systems and equipment, transformer systems, battery banks, Direct Current (DC) systems, instrumentation and condition monitoring systems). Provide recommendations by identifying upcoming work requirements and providing management with the appropriate information to ensure necessary work is appropriately planned for.
- Plant Equipment Assessment - provide detailed engineering recommendations regarding equipment maintenance, overhauls, and repairs along with associated budget requirements.
- Design Review and Coordination with Site - review technical vendor submissions for compliance with contract documents and technical suitability.
- Support Project Execution - monitor contract work and verify milestone achievements and certification, assist Turbine and Generator Works Manager with project management functions, including contract administration and internal reporting.
- Field "Erector level" Oversight - provide oversight and field expertise of the disassembly, refurbishment, and reassembly of turbine and generator units, including balance of plant systems, protection and controls, MCCs, instrumentation, and condition monitoring systems, while ensuring work meets engineering and quality standards and participating in Factory Acceptance Testing as required.
Our ideal teammate will have:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Registered Professional Engineer licensed in New Brunswick or eligible for immediate transfer
- Eight years of experience in power generation (turbine and generator unit upgrades, overhauls, refurbishments and replanting), heavy mechanical, and/or balance of plant construction or design work, with
- Five years of demonstrated experience overseeing and executing technical and project-related activities for turbine and generator systems or similar large rotating equipment.
In addition, the successful candidate will have experience:
- Working as part of, or managing, a design team during the planning, detailed design, execution, and close-out phases of a mega-project
- Providing technical guidance in the field of heavy mechanical or hydro-power construction including answering requests for information (RFIs), managing Contractor quality programs, and managing changed conditions
- Overseeing project work including, but not limited to, project scope definition, cost estimates, development of tender documents, project planning and coordination. Conducting project meetings, organizing, and executing all aspects of project work from start to finish
- Leading or mentoring engineers and technical teams
- Valid Class 5 Drivers License.
Assets include experience in commissioning, mechanical refurbishments, dam and spillway gates, sluiceways, and/or brownfield or overhaul projects.
An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. Subject to competition response, the minimum qualifications may be modified.
An Eligibility List generated from this competition may be used to fill future vacancies at the same level within a period of up to 12 months.
