The Opportunity

Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Person is responsible for carrying out material and equipment installations, renovations, repairs, and servicing in the following areas - carpentry, plumbing, heating, basic electrical, painting, ventilation, on properties, under the jurisdiction of Nova Scotia Provincial Housing Agency. The incumbent is also required to carry out preventative maintenance to all assigned NSPHA buildings, appliances, fixtures, utilities, and equipment in accordance with established standards, policies, and procedures; assist with maintaining buildings and grounds in clean and proper order; monitoring contractors engaged to carry out maintenance contracts; and providing recommendations regarding the replacement and acquisition of materials and equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain properties including maintenance and repairs of walks, driveways, parking areas, drainage systems, curbs and gutters, swales, culverts, manholes, and catch basins.
  • Repair foundation including crack repairs, parging, flashing, and related mortar installations.
  • Install, maintain, and repair finished carpentry components such as door jambs, doors, exterior fascia, soffits, railings, wood trim, counters, cupboards, shelving, windows, glass, and screening.
  • Replace and repair asphalt and wood shingles, siding, building paper, gable, eave and roof vents, eaves troughs, conductor pipe, and flashing.
  • Restore and install finishes such as drywall, including taping and filling, suspended ceilings, ceramic tile, and flooring including tile and sheet vinyl.
  • Maintain and repair sanitary drainage and venting systems, domestic hot and cold-water systems, exhaust and air supply systems, heating system components, domestic hot-water heating systems, and plumbing fixtures and trim.
  • Monitor, repair, and arrange for service, in accordance with applicable codes and employer's policy and procedures, fire alarms, fire extinguishers, emergency and exit lighting, lighting and power systems and fixtures, doorbells, and entry intercom systems.
  • Prepare and complete documentation such as work orders, vehicle reports, maintenance logs, inspection reports, and inventory records.
  • Respond to after-hours maintenance calls while participating on the standby duty roster.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Must Have

  • Grade 12 or equivalent, plus five years' experience in building and property maintenance or a related field. Must be able to perform basic tasks in carpentry, plumbing, heating, electrical, painting, and drywall.
  • Knowledge of residential building technology, basic knowledge of the National Building Code and Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Possess current Emergency First Aid and WHMIS certifications.
  • Ability to operate electrical and mechanical tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks using good body mechanics.
  • Possess a valid Nova Scotia driver's license with access to a reliable vehicle for work purposes.

Assets:

  • Knowledge of computer systems.
  • Knowledge of Yardi.

An equivalent combination of training, education and experience may be considered.

This position requires a valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle. Regular travel within Northern District is required.
