Reporting to the Area Manager, the Maintenance Technician is responsible for carrying out basic material and equipment installations, renovations, repairs, and servicing in carpentry, plumbing, heating, basic electrical, painting, and ventilation. The role also performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs on buildings, appliances, fixtures, utilities, and equipment in accordance with established standards, policies, and procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain properties under the jurisdiction of Build Nova Scotia, including walks, driveways, parking areas, drainage systems, curbs and gutters, swales, culverts, manholes, and catch basins.
  • Maintain and repair all aspects of the building envelope of Build Nova Scotia properties.
  • Restore and install finishes and finished carpentry components, and repair or replace door hinges, springs, handles, and related components.
  • Prepare interior and exterior surfaces and apply paint, stain, varnish, and associated sealers.
  • Complete documentation such as work orders, vehicle reports, maintenance logs, inspection reports, and inventory records.
  • Recommend replacement or acquisition of equipment and materials.
  • Respond to after-hours maintenance calls while participating on the standby duty roster.
  • Actively participate in the Build Nova Scotia Safety Program and group safety discussions.
  • Maintain and operate mowers and power tools.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Grade 12 or equivalent, plus five years of experience in building and property maintenance or a related field.
  • Ability to perform basic tasks in carpentry, plumbing, heating, electrical, painting, and drywall.
  • Ability to operate electrical and mechanical tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks using good body mechanics.
  • Knowledge of residential building technology, and basic knowledge of the National Building Code and Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Valid Nova Scotia driver's license with access to a reliable vehicle for work purposes.
  • Emergency First Aid and WHMIS certifications are considered assets.
  • Knowledge of computer systems is an asset.
  • Key competencies include organization, attention to detail, analytical skills, problem solving, and communication.

Pay Grade: NSL-05

Salary Range: $1864.86 - $2119.15 Bi-Weekly

Salary Placement: The placement of a new hire into the salary range is based on an objective salary rating process. This process will assess the knowledge, skills and overall qualifications of a candidate along with internal equity to determine appropriate compensation placement. Each pay grade has established steps, and new hires cannot exceed certain maximums which are outlined in the Compensation Framework. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on these factors.
