Responsibilities

Reporting to the Facilities Manager, Facilities and Ancillary Services, the Maintenance Technician will be a member of the Facilities Maintenance team and will be responsible for ensuring the care of the NBCC buildings and related grounds of the Saint John campus.

In this role, your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Facilities maintenance involving carpentry, plumbing and electrical work.
  • Interior/exterior building repair including repair of roofs of buildings.
  • Maintenance of heating, ventilation, refrigeration and boiler systems.
  • Maintaining and repairing equipment.
  • Repair and maintenance work, maintaining construction materials inventory and estimating costs of jobs, and requisitioning of supplies.
  • Ensure projects and tasks are performed in accordance with established safe work practices and WorksafeNB guidelines.
  • Snow removal and grounds work as required.
  • Provide directions to employees of other classifications on:
    • locations equipment, connections, cutting, patching and similar
    • best practices in competing tasks and installing equipment
    • job start up, commissioning, clean up and safe work practices.

The successful candidate would receive general supervision from a supervisor who assigns and reviews work. They will conduct technical research to determine work methods and procedures.

These job duties represent only the basic duties of the job. Related and allied duties may be assigned as they become necessary to the operation of NBCC. Employees must have basic computer skills including word processing, email and data entry.

Regular hours of work are based on a 40- hour work week. Additional overtime and weekend work may be required. This position may require shift work.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid journeyperson license in electrical.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with:
    • 1-3 years of experience in building, electrical, and/or mechanical trades; or
    • Post-secondary training in a relevant trade (e.g., apprenticeship program) combined with 3-6 years of related experience; or
    • An equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Candidates must possess a valid Driver's License as travel will be required.
  • Preference may be given to candidates who have experience working in a post-secondary environment.

Other combinations of education and experience may be considered as equivalent. Subject to competition response, the minimum qualifications may be raised.
