Job Description

The Community Recreation Assistant will work closely with CNIB staff to support the expansion of CNIB's community-based programming and its fundraising efforts throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. This position will work closely with the Manager of Operations and Community Engagement to support the team's efforts in providing both in-person and virtual programming to clients provincewide. This position will also work closely with the Coordinator of Community Giving to support the expansion of CNIB's fundraising events.

The successful applicant will be a part of a busy and dynamic work environment that welcomes people from all walks of life into our building daily. They will learn the importance of working together as a team to create change in our community for people with disabilities. The successful applicant will create relationships with staff that are based on encouragement, constructive feedback, openness, truth, respect, learning, and sharing. They will learn how to make autonomous decisions, demonstrate initiative, take responsibility and be accountable for their work. Perhaps most importantly, due to the nature of the not-for-profit sector, they will learn the importance of creative, out-of-the-box thinking and resourcefulness when it comes to accomplishing goals with limited resources.

Essential Duties:

  • Design, plan, and execute imaginative, age-appropriate recreational and leisure time activities for child and youth programs throughout the summer, with a specific focus on the planning and organization of our Annual Family Summer Camp.
  • Support all camp-related activities, including but not limited to planning, logistics, registration, promotion, volunteer recruitment, in-kind donations (i.e. craft supplies), as well as work with other disability groups and community partners to share resources and adapted recreational equipment.
  • Attend and help with camp August 5th - 9th at the Lion Max Simms Camp on the Bay D'espoir Highway
  • Support fund development activities, such as the CNIB Summer Garden Party, including but not limited to securing raffles prizes, booking required vendors, interacting with volunteers, helping to publicize the events through social media, radio, and other types of media, as well as event day support and coordination.

Other duties include:

  • Interact with clients and volunteers with regard to upcoming programming.
  • General Administration duties that may arise during placement.
  • Support day-to-day activities such as greeting visitors to our building, fielding calls from participants with questions about our community-based programming.
  • Work in the CNIB SmartLife store, assisting customers, processing sales, and offering support to the Program Lead.

Work Environment

  • Working from the CNIB Office, 70 The Boulevard.
  • Reports to the Manager of Operations and Community Engagement, but works closely with the Coordinator, Community Giving.
