SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Process Safety Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining Process Safety Management (PSM) programs to ensure the safe design, operation, and modification of processes that handle hazardous materials. This role ensures regulatory compliance, reduces operational risk, and drives continuous improvement by leading hazard analyses, supporting Management of Change (MOC) activities, overseeing mechanical integrity programs, and managing the closure of process safety action items, while ensuring alignment with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) requirements. The engineer applies ASME and API codes and standards to support mechanical integrity, equipment design reviews, inspection planning, and compliance with process safety and GMP expectations, partnering with operations, engineering, EHS, and leadership to prevent catastrophic incidents and protect people, assets, and the environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Facilitate process hazard analysis (PHA), hazard operability studies (HAZOPs), what-if/checklist, failure mode and effects analysis (FEMA), including facility siting and human factors. Identify worst-case scenarios, recommend safeguards and risk reduction
  • Support asset integrity and reliability. Work with engineering to ensure critical equipment (pressure vessels, piping, relief systems, controls) is designed to the appropriate code/standard, properly inspected, tested and maintained. Help define inspection intervals and acceptance criteria, analyze equipment failures and near-misses.
  • Management of change program, review changes to equipment, chemicals, operating conditions procedure or software. Ensure safety impacts are assessed before changes are implanted, verify training, documentation and safeguards are updated.
  • Conduct, support pre-startup safety reviews and pre-qualification walkdowns, including review process safety information, and managing action- items
  • Support, develop, review, operating procedures & safe work practices, and permit systems (hot work, confined space, line breaking)
  • Support, investigate incidents, near-misses, and abnormal events. Perform root cause analysis, recommend corrective and preventative actions, track actions to completions
  • Ensure compliance with regulations and recommended practices by using Risk Based Process Safety (RBPS), prepare for inspections and audits, maintain required process safety documentation.
  • Encourage and support employee commitment to process safety with training, operation, engineering and personnel on process hazards. Reinforce process safety culture (learning from incidents, stopping unsafe work). Help employees understand why certain system systems exist.
  • Consider risk management and safeguard effectiveness. Evaluate layers of protection (alarms and interlocks, reliefs systems, administrative controls, emergency response)
  • Additional duties as assigned, based on business needs
Qualifications
  • Education:

  • Minimum of Bachelor of Science in Engineering (chemical, mechanical or related). PEng preferred
  • Experience:

  • 2+ years' experience facilitating and leading process hazard analysis, certification preferred
  • 5+ years' experience applying the principles of process safety
  • 5+ years' experience with hazard identification and risk assessment techniques
  • Minimum 2 years' experience working in a GMP environment
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team
  • Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, reactions, fluid flow
  • Hazardous properties of chemicals (including dust hazards)
  • Ability to collaborate across operation, maintenance and management
  • Strong documentation skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Technical knowledge of PHA software, experience with PHA works preferred

Additional Details

This job has a full time weekly schedule.The full-time equivalent pay range for this position is $93,521.00 - $146,126.00/yr CAD plus eligibility for bonus, stock and benefits. Our pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
