Beach Lifeguards - Saint John

Seasonal Positions: Full Time and Part Time Available

The CGAC provides lifeguarding for four beaches in Saint John: Lily Lake (Rockwood), Fisher Lakes (Rockwood), Dominion Park Beach, and Little River Reservoir.

Positions Available:

  • Beach Lifeguard - June 20 to Sept 7

Please note that all Beach staff are required to attend one of two mandatory trainings, which will be offered on the following dates:

  • June 6: 3:00pm-6:00pm
  • June 19: Times TBD

Under the direction of the Aquatics Manager, Duty Managers, and Beach Site Supervisors, the Beach Lifeguards ensure the safety of patrons who use the beach area at the four beaches where the Canada Games Aquatic Centre provides lifeguarding services: Lily Lake (Rockwood), Fisher Lakes (Rockwood), Dominion Park Beach, and Little River Reservoir. They are required to keep track of their qualifications and ensure they remain up to date. They are responsible for ensuring the safety of all users of the beaches by actively supervising swimmers in the marked swimming areas, providing first aid when necessary, and conducting any tasks outlined by their supervisors to ensure the beach is safe and prepared for any users of the area. They are also required to set up the beach at the beginning of the shift and tear down the equipment at the end of the shift.

Summary of Duties

  • Treat patrons and coworkers with courtesy and respect
  • Oversee all beach users and enforce beach rules
  • Educate users on safety practices and requirements
  • Maintain records required by the Canada Games Aquatic Centre's policies, including beach attendance, water/beach conditions, weather conditions, and incidents
  • Be familiar with the beach hours of operation
  • Ensure required equipment is in good order and in position for the start of the beach shift
  • Remain composed and professional
  • Be easily identifiable as the beach guard on duty by wearing the required Beach Lifeguard uniform
  • Be available to respond to incidents/first aid or public relations when on float (not active scanning duty)

Required Qualifications

  • National Lifeguard (beach) Certification
  • Standard First Aid with CPR-C/AED

  • Works cooperatively and amicably with others
  • Discretion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference may be given to bilingual (English/French) candidates
  • Experience working at beaches
  • Those who require minimal days off will be prioritized for scheduling purposes

Compensation

  • $16.89-$17.39 per hour

Conditions of Employment

  • Current acceptable Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector checks
  • Must maintain certifications
  • Available to work one of the predetermined Summer Schedules
  • Required to work at least one weekend day
  • Those who require minimal days off will be prioritized for scheduling purposes
  • Must complete WHMIS training
