Jump Recruitment, on behalf of our client, The Innu Round Table Secretariat, is seeking a Social Worker to join their team. This will be a rotational position located in Natuashish, Labrador.

Background

The Innu Round Table Secretariat works for the collective well-being of the Mushuau and Sheshatshiu Innu. Specific to the well-being of Innu children and families, the Sheshatshiu and Mushuau Innu First Nations determined that Prevention Services is the agency to develop and deliver Innu child and family supports and services to families involved, or at risk of being involved in the formal child protection system. The agency is Innu led, with a holistic approach to wellness and is working towards the full Innu jurisdiction of Innu child and family services.

Based on Innu knowledge and culture, the goal of the prevention services agency is to reduce the overall involvement of Innu children and families in the current child protection system through the Department of Social Supports and Well-Being (SSWB) and the system's impacts, especially on children, as well as to encourage and support family and community health.

The Position

Living and working full time in Natuashish, and reporting to the Clinical Services Manager, this position requires an individual with a social work background and a strong desire to help bring about meaningful social change. You are an ally to and part of the agency team of Innu Representatives and who are Mushuau Innu First Nation members who also live in Natuashish. You will also share responsibilities with other social workers working 2-week rotations flying in and out of Natuashish. As a social worker, you will have direct responsibility to help oversee the ongoing implementation and evaluation of the Innu-SSWB Protocol which outlines the commitment by both prevention services and SSWB to share information and work collaboratively on the continual improvement of culturally meaningful services for Innu. The social worker partners with all Innu team members to assist in the delivery of advocacy services and case management processes, including the maintenance of confidential notes and files.

This work will be undertaken consistent with the Innu Care Approach, the framework for Innu child and family well-being that reflects Innu culture and values.

Key Duties and Functions

  1. Cultural competence
    • Build a growing knowledge base about Innu culture by participating as fully as possible in ongoing learning opportunities about Innu history and the Innu vision for collective health, including but not limited to the Innu Healing Strategy, the Innu Care Approach, the Mushuau Innu history timeline and the Mushuau Innu People's Inquiry Gathering Voices Report.
    • Demonstrate a willingness to unlearn cultural biases and misinformation that come from the colonial perspective to incorporate new learnings about Innu history, culture, strengths and health.
  2. Teamwork
    • Build relationships to be an ally of all Innu Prevention Services team members.
    • Engage with other community health workers across the First Nation to build effective relationships between the various Innu health services and programs.
    • Develop and maintain an effective working relationship with SSWB staff in Natuashish and other offices as needed.
  3. Services provision
    • Focus on the development of a wide range of prevention activities and strategies reflecting Innu culture and the Innu Care Approach which would potentially assist all community members and meet specific needs for cultural programming.
    • Understand the scope of current services for children and families as well as service gaps to help Innu Representatives and community workers develop and coordinate intervention plans and services.
    • Work with families, community staff, and other service providers to develop and implement case management plans for children returning home following periods in care.
    • Develop various communication and outreach materials, in collaboration with other health services providers in the community, to build community awareness about prevention focused programs and service delivery.
    • Participate in recreational and other community events and activities being offered to the community.
  4. Administrative
    • Maintain a filing system to document and manage the collection of information, materials, ideas etc. about various prevention strategies and activities.
    • Participate in regular meetings with the prevention team members.
    • Represent the IRT Secretariat and the community on specific groups or committees as required.
  5. Related duties
    • As may be assigned.

Qualifications, Abilities and Skills

  • A degree in social work and registration with the NLCSW or another provincial regulatory body.
  • Social Work experience in an Indigenous community would be preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and effective communication skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of colonialism and the impacts of intergenerational trauma, especially on Indigenous children who are involved within child welfare systems.
  • Clear code of conduct and vulnerable sector checks.
  • Hold a valid Driver's License.

This role offers a unique opportunity for a dedicated social worker who is passionate about fostering meaningful social change. The position is based in Natuashish, Labrador, and follows a rotational schedule of two weeks on, followed by two weeks off.
