The Maintenance Technician will provide a range of general maintenance, construction, and repair services throughout NSCAD University buildings. Working with the facilities staff and reporting to the Manager of Facilities, the position assists in performing various maintenance tasks and projects.

Responsibilities
  • Performs various plumbing repairs.
  • Ability to do drywall repairs.
  • Must be an excellent painter with experience that speaks to this skillset.
  • Maintains and repairs various heating systems.
  • Maintains and repairs exhaust fan and HVAC systems, including boilers and pumps.
  • Performs various carpentry and small construction projects, i.e., room renovations, sanding, finishing of all types of interior surface finishes, etc.
  • Installs lock sets and cuts keys for the facility.
  • Installs and repairs VC Tile, wood, laminate, and ceramic floors.
  • Based on prior experience performs minor electrical repairs, i.e., re-lamping, ballasts, plugs and switches, etc.
  • Performs minor mechanical installations, i.e., window air conditioners, etc.
  • Assists with stand-by duties - after hours call-in for emergencies. Available for overtime if required.
  • Comfortable with use of building and energy management systems.
  • Moving and relocation of office furniture and various inventory items.
  • Delivers heavy or large packages from the Service Centre as requested.
  • Assists with monthly safety inspections including emergency lighting, clearing of fire exits, inspecting fire extinguishers. Technician must assume a role as Fire Warden.
  • Other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Completion of Grade 12 combined with at least five (5) years of related employment experience is required.
  • A semi-skilled trades person with technical training and/or apprenticeship in carpentry and the mechanical trades or have an equivalent combination of training and work experience is preffered.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects is required.
  • The incumbent should be able to identify safety hazards which are associated with the use of carpentry, plumbing and electrical tools, and chemicals and be prepared to oversee these items with care.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to communicate with students, staff and faculty are required.
  • The incumbent must be able to work around the operations of the university and be flexible enough to adjust to changes in daily routine as well as being regularly rotated from one area of the university to another area or Campus.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision is required.
  • Having Fall Arrest Training, ladder training or First Aid Training is an asset.
