A campus of Memorial University, the Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) is North America's most comprehensive marine institute dedicated to education, training, applied research, industrial response, and technology transfer supporting oceans industries. Operating under the MI's School of Ocean Technology, the Centre for Applied Ocean Technology (CTec) provides research and development support, industry outreach and scientific/technical advisory services to its clients and partners with expertise available in areas ranging from ocean observation and ocean mapping to remotely operated vehicles and the operation of autonomous surface and underwater technologies. The Centre is based at The Launch, MI's ocean innovation centre and a major cornerstone facility for the Canadian oceans ecosystem, located approximately 35 mins from St. John's in the Town of Holyrood, NL. This team works on the cutting edge of ocean technology in collaboration with a wide range of marine sectors locally, nationally and internationally to enhance the safety, efficiency, sustainability and profitability of maritime pursuits through the application of technology.
MI leads the operation of Smart Atlantic, Canada's largest applied ocean observation system, providing real-time meteorological and oceanographic data to improve safety and efficiency for marine industries. This information is made openly available in near real time to the user community and operational decision making, research and development and ocean management through CIOOS: the Canadian Integrated Ocean Observing System, a national initiative of public, private and academic institutions to coordinate ocean observing activities and facilitate knowledge sharing to integrate and disseminate high-quality and historical oceanographic data via a web-based platform.
DUTIES
The successful applicant will engage with regional ocean data providers and users to facilitate effective discovery, access, and reuse of marine data. This role will also contribute to communications and outreach activities that promote the Marine Institute's mandate to collect, steward, and make ocean data openly available in support of research, collaboration, and evidence-based decision-making. Meaningful and appropriate engagement with Indigenous governments, organizations and communities will be a key role of this position. Specific duties will include but are not limited to:
- Serve as a liaison between MI and academic, government, and applied ocean researchers who use marine data.
- Promote best practices in open data, data stewardship, and responsible data sharing within the ocean research community.
- Work closely with data providers to translate complex data holdings and systems into accessible, research-relevant information.
- Support training and capacity-building activities for data providers and users, including development of documentation and organization of seminars, workshops, and webinars.
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate or undergraduate degree in oceanography, marine science, environmental science, information science, or a closely related discipline; 3-5 years of relevant experience working with the collection, interpretation and dissemination of ocean data; An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. Demonstrated experience in stakeholder engagement, data support, and knowledge mobilization; Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex scientific and technical information clearly and accurately; Strong organizational, interpersonal and writing skills are required with a demonstrated ability to work with a geographically distributed team. Familiarity with open science principles, research data management practices, and data repositories or research infrastructures and experience developing and implementing communication plans are highly desirable.
SALARY: $66,626 – $86,520 per annum (Research and Technical Personnel V, NAPE Local 7405)
