Department Overview
TDIGI's Corporate Actuarial team is accountable for the assessment of policy liabilities according to TDI's Risk Appetite Statement using accepted actuarial practice and regulatory requirements in Canada. The valuation team's responsibilities are to ensure the model underlying the calculation of the technical provisions appropriately addresses the main risk drivers ensuring the appropriateness of methodologies and assumptions made.
Job Description
The Reserving (Valuation) team is part of the Corporate Actuarial department and is responsible for the actuarial evaluation of claims reserves, including case reserves, IBNR, reserve adjustments, and reserve movement analyses, within a financial close and corporate governance context. In this role, the candidate will contribute to the success of the Valuation team by providing guidance, support, leadership and appropriate coaching in the execution of the team's main responsibilities, including:
Reserves Valuation:
- Responsible for the establishment of actuarial provisions for all lines of business and the methodologies underlying key assumption selections used in the quarterly valuation process.
- Responsible for monthly monitoring and modification of key assumptions over time and measuring impacts of changes.
- Responsible for the delivery of claims liabilities and ultimate profitability of insurance entities.
- Create and deliver forward?looking analyses that translate complex reserving results into clear insights on emerging trends.
- Coordinate the creation of decks to communicate the key findings and outcomes of the monthly analysis to executives and loss reserve committee members.
- Responsible for the estimation of average reserves to input into the operational system.
- Collaborate with various business partners to discuss ongoing business initiatives and emerging trends.
- Oversee that the overall process is well governed and documented to comply with SOX requirements and other standard requirements.
- Communicate/provide with external and internal auditors data as well as key assumptions and selection criteria. Key source in providing internal audit with necessary support.
Reporting
- Responsible for the creation of all legal entities Appointed Actuaries Reports (AAR) and supporting documentation.
- Coordinates the communication and certification of the financial results with various business partners, including external auditors, AMF and OSFI.
- Supervise the maintenance and creation of meaningful reports to monitor the adequacy of actuarial provisions over time. Actual losses versus expected losses are monitored monthly.
Job Requirements
Professional Requirements:
- Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society or Canadian Institute of Actuaries is an asset
- Bachelor's degree in actuarial science or other quantitative areas of study
- Minimum 8 years of diversified actuarial experience in a general insurance company
- Management experience and/or ability to develop, coach and inspire a team to support medium to long-term business needs
Analytical/technical Skills:
- Knowledge of accounting and financial concepts
- Stands out for his/her judgment and analytical mind
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to proactively identify risks/issues and recommend solutions
- Recognized for his/her thoroughness and the quality of his/her work
- Has work experience with MS Excel (VBA), programming languages (eg. R/SAS/Python)
