JOB PURPOSE

To collaboratively participate in the planning and delivery of total nursing care to meet individual patient needs in accordance with the philosophy, objectives and policies of the Relief Team and Surgical Departments. As a member of an interdisciplinary team, provides quality patient care within the scope of professional nursing practice to patients and families in the 5600 General Surgery, and 6600 Orthopedics Units. Although primarily assigned to these areas, may be reassigned to any patient care area as directed by the Nursing Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current registration as a practicing member of the Nurses Association of New Brunswick.
  • Successful completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support Course and recertified yearly as a condition of continuing employment
  • Possesses the medical/surgical nursing knowledge and clinical skills/expertise necessary to provide care for this population and off service patients.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond to emergency situations, rapidly changing priorities, and complex patient care needs.
  • Be willing to obtain and maintain competency in the nursing care of patient requiring:
  • PN - parental nutrition
  • CVAD line - central venous access device
  • Accessing/de-accessing Port-a-caths and Hickman lines within three (3) months
  • Chest tubes
  • Orthopaedic traction
  • PCA - patient controlled analgesia and epidurals
  • Wound vac application and maintenance
  • Care of the dying and family care
  • Pain management courses
  • Other medical surgical competencies as necessary
  • Burn care education as directed
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention or obtain within 1 year.
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts, as assigned, including weekends and holidays throughout the year.
  • Ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Good work Record.
