Reporting to the Associate General Counsel, you will be part of a high-performing in-house legal team that supports a dynamic organization focused on growth and value creation for its customers, employees and shareholders. Your primary duties will include drafting and negotiating agreements and providing legal advice and guidance on a wide range of corporate and commercial matters affecting Emera and its diverse business interests.

You will also contribute to Emera's business development and financing initiatives, including support for acquisitions, joint ventures, strategic investments, project, debt and equity financings and capital markets transactions. In addition, you will support the sound and progressive governance and compliance practices of the Emera group of companies.

This term position is an excellent opportunity to gain meaningful commercial in-house experience within a dynamic business environment based out of Halifax. Business travel may be required on occasion.


Key elements of this role include:
  • Drafting and negotiating a wide variety of commercial agreements, such as NDAs, MSAs, SaaS/IT contracts, term sheets, and shareholder/partnership agreements.
  • Support for financings, acquisitions, joint ventures projects, and other commercial transactions, including managing due diligence efforts.
  • Employment law and HR support.
  • Advising on applicable compliance, privacy, and insurance matters.
  • Preparing documentation for intercompany corporate arrangements.
  • Legal research and advice.
  • Litigation management (with external counsel).

These skills will make you successful:

To thrive in this role, you recognize yourself in most of the following competencies and skills listed below:

  • Three to five years of post-call corporate and/or commercial experience in private practice and/or an in-house environment. Other tenures of experience may also be considered.
  • Be a member in good standing of a provincial law society and be eligible for admission to the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society.
  • Ability to communicate in an effective and non-technical manner and exceptional organizational and project management skills are essential.
  • Be a proactive team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated capability of independently drafting and negotiating commercial agreements.
  • Experience with IT contracting would be helpful.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deliverables concurrently.
  • Background or experience with the energy or regulated utility industry is an asset but not required.
  • However, an interest in the energy sector and a desire to learn the business and contribute to Emera's business strategy is essential.
