The Opportunity
We are currently seeking two (2) Ground Control Technologists to join our Mines Technical Services team in Voisey's Bay, Labrador, a fly-in fly-out operation. Relocation will be required for this role.
The role is a permanent on site position, working a 2 week on/2 week off schedule.
As a Ground Control Technologist, you will be responsible for providing intermediate level technical support for ground control functions within the mine on a daily execution schedule, as well as act as the liaison with Operations crews to ensure ground support standards and conditions are in accordance with the Voisey's Bay Ground Control Management Plan.
Additionally, in this position you will:
Main Accountabilities - Ground Control:
- To monitor compliance with ground control related regulations, policies and standards at both open pit and underground operations.
- Daily field visits to observe local conditions, working closely with Operations development and production crews.
- Respond to operational requests for in-field observation and assessment.
- Document reconditioning, ground control instruction (GCI) progress, communicate for potential impacts to 7/21 schedule.
- Audit and monitor in-field ground support testing.
- Complete backfill berm/paste wall installation checklist as required.
- Assist with the preparation of reconditioning plans for issue.
- Mapping faces for ground support, upload to Deswik.
- Assist with surveying, ventilation, and geotech requests as required;
General:
- Monitor mine development, production and construction excavation projects with respect to conformance to short term production plans raising issues of non-conformance to the Supervisor.
- Identify, analyze and recommend opportunities for safety, productivity and cost improvements.
- Daily underground travel is required.

About You
Education:
- A Mining or Geology Technician Diploma is required.
- B.Sc. in Mining Engineering is preferred.
Experience:
- A minimum of 3 years' progressive experience at a mining operation, within a technical services department.
- Preference will be given to candidates with related underground engineering experience.
Skills:
- Required to perform technical tasks, procedures or calculations pertaining to geo tech and ground control disciplines; uses applicable software at a functional level.
- Strong computer skills, ability to learn MTS technical tools and software, eg. Deswik, Minax, and MS Office (Excel).
- Ability to take initiative and work within a team environment is required.
- Strong documentation and communication skills.
- Ability to take direction and execute work plans.
- Ability to work in underground environment including active mining areas, confined spaces, climbing ladders, working at heights, fall arrest systems, etc.
