The Opportunity

We are currently seeking Emergency Response Leads to join our Health, Safety, Environment & Risk Team in Long Harbour, NL.

There are both permanent and fixed-term on-site positions available, working a 12-hour rotating schedule at the Long Harbour Operations site. The fixed-term opportunities are until the end of December 2026.

As an Emergency Response Lead, you will train and lead emergency response at the Long Harbour Processing Plant by providing oversight to Emergency Response team members to ensure that Operations are adequately prepared for an emergency response and capable of protecting people, property and the environment. Your experience and skills will ensure the emergency response program is adequately establish and incorporated into the Crisis Management System as well as ensuring the incident command is in place for a broad range of response scenarios.

Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Be a subject matter expert on the Emergency Response Plan and determine response scenarios at the Long Harbour Processing Plant.
  • Oversee and lead a team of Auxiliary Emergency Response Team (AERT) members in all emergency scenarios including but not limited to medical, fire, gas response, hazardous materials, dam/water retaining structure failure, environmental response, and high angle & confined space rescue, etc.
  • Ensure 24-hour continuity of Emergency Response Incident Command on site through shift hand-over and on call support as scheduled
  • Be responsible to train and check competency of the AERT members in accordance with the AERT training program as well as enter training records in Vale Education System (VES)
  • Ensure readiness of all emergency response assets through required inspections
  • Maintain emergency response equipment to applicable legislative requirements

About You

Education:

  • Post secondary education is required
    • Preference will be given to Primary Care Paramedic and Advanced Care Paramedic or those with the ability/willingness to obtain this designation
  • NFPA Firefighter Level I and II is required
  • Class 5 or equivalent driver's license is required
  • The following certifications would be considered an asset:
    • NFPA 472 - Hazardous Materials Operations
    • NFPA 1002 - Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications
    • EMT (Emergency Medical Tech) or AMFR (Advanced Medical First Responder)
    • NFPA 1081 - Industrial Firefighter
    • NFPA 1051 – Wildland Firefighting
    • NFPA 1006 - Technical Rescuer Core
    • NFPA 1041 - Fire Instructor Level 1

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a similar role
  • Experience in a fire/rescue or wildfire setting is an asset
  • Experience delivering in class and practical training

Skills:

  • Competent knowledge of applicable OH&S and NFPA legislation
  • Familiar with NFPA codes based on fire protection systems
  • Excellent communication
  • Able to work independently, as well as part of a team
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal skills, analytical thinking, and leadership qualities
  • Knowledge to check and troubleshoot fire alarm panel issues
  • Ability to provide technical support and guidance for out of service fire protection equipment or system
