The Joint Economic Development Initiative (JEDI) is dedicated to supporting Indigenous peoples in reaching their full economic development potential through advocacy and networking.

The Cultural Officer is responsible for ensuring Indigenous culture, language, and ways of knowing are meaningfully integrated into all aspects of JEDI's Mobile Makerspace program delivery. This role works closely with internal staff, external partners, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and communities to support culturally grounded, respectful, and community-driven programming. The Cultural Officer provides cultural guidance and support to program staff, helps build and maintain strong community relationships, and ensures that programming aligns with Indigenous values, cultural protocols, and community priorities.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Integrate Indigenous culture, language, and traditional knowledge into Mobile Makerspace programming and activities.
  • Support the use and visibility of Indigenous languages within program delivery where appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with Elders and Knowledge Keepers to guide cultural content and programming.
  • Ensure cultural protocols, teachings, and practices are respected and followed.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to co-develop culturally relevant programming.
  • Support community engagement, outreach, and relationship-building efforts.
  • Provide cultural guidance and support to facilitators, instructors, and staff.
  • Assist with adapting programming to reflect community-specific cultural contexts.
  • Promote culturally safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environments.

Qualifications Required

  • Post-secondary education that supports traditional cultural knowledge (such as Indigenous Studies), with experience in presentation and workshop delivery, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and community practices.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities, Elders, and/or Knowledge Keepers.
  • Experience in community-based programming, cultural education, or related work.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based, mobile program environment.
  • Valid driver's license, and willingness and ability to travel as required.
  • Satisfactory criminal background/vulnerable sector clearance and maintenance.

Assets

  • Indigenous language knowledge or experience supporting language revitalization.
  • Experience working with youth and/or community-based programs.
  • Familiarity with Indigenous education frameworks, land-based learning, or STEAM programming.
  • Experience with digital fabrication tools such as 3D printers, CNC machines, laser engravers, and related technologies.

Salary range: $53,772 - $65,722 per annum
