The Opportunity

We are currently looking for an Assistant Shift Engineer (ASE) to join our team at Brooklyn Power on a full time, permanent basis. Brooklyn Power is a biomass-wood fired power plant, consisting of a 30 MW turbine/generator and a 330,000 lb/hr fluidizer bed boiler.

Key elements of this role include:

  • Ensure all safety, environmental and security issues are identified to the Control Room Operator immediately;
  • Implement and carry out plant policies to ensure acceptable safety and housekeeping standards are maintained;
  • Monitor plant grounds and alert the Control Room Operator of any abnormal conditions external to the plant;
  • Take corrective action as requested by the Control Room Operator;
  • Assist plant maintenance personnel as required to ensure plant availability;
  • Perform all duties related to safe start up, running and shutdown of the turbine generator, boiler and associated plant auxiliary equipment;
  • Perform routine preventive and corrective maintenance;
  • Submit work requests in the CMMS for all defective equipment;
  • Participate in ongoing training programs;
  • Help to develop and implement procedures, standards and practices relating to the operation of the plant;
  • Perform continuous equipment monitoring rounds, record readings and complete checklists as required;
  • Learn the control room operations and relieve as required;
  • Administer the operation, maintenance and performance of the plant water treatment systems to ensure required capacity and quality of demineralized water;
  • Ensure procedures are followed to provide wastewater discharge limitation compliance.

To thrive in this role, you recognize yourself in most of the following competencies and skills listed below:

  • The successful candidate must have as a minimum a 2nd Class Power Engineering Certificate (3rd class engineer working towards the 2nd class will be considered);
  • Completion of in-house Assistant Shift Engineering Training modules is mandatory;
  • Candidates interested in progressing to Control Room Operator must successfully complete the DCS training modules within a scheduled amount of time (upon discussion);
  • Interpersonal skills and the ability to function effectively in a team environment is essential to success in this role;
  • Occasional after hour and emergency plant work may be required;
  • Must be available to work shift work;
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders and working at heights will be required;
  • Must be comfortable working in confined spaces.
