The Kennebecasis Valley Fire Department has served both of these communities for over 100 years and has a fire station located in each town. This career fire department of over 40 members is looking for individuals interested in joining our team as a Holiday Relief Firefighter Class 2. The Kennebecasis Valley Fire Department will be creating a roster of qualified candidates for upcoming vacancies within the fire suppression division.
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to a company officer, a Holiday Relief Firefighter Class 2 is an entry level position within the bargaining unit. The role of the holiday relief firefighter is to be assigned to an emergency, to fill in for an absent full-time firefighter or to perform other job-related duties. Duties include responding to routine calls and emergency fire alarms, combating, extinguishing and preventing fires and the saving of life and property. They are responsible for rapidly and efficiently performing various duties under emergency conditions that frequently involve considerable hazard such as working in structure fire conditions, technical rescue environments like ice and water and confined spaces. Routine work includes the inspection and maintenance of firefighting equipment and department property and facilities and such other related duties that may be assigned. The position is unionized under the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 3591, offering competitive salaries and benefits.
EDUCATION AND REQUIREMENTS
• Legally entitled to work in Canada
• Bondable
• Clear criminal record and vulnerable sector check
• Minimum grade 12 education or G.E.D. Diploma
• Valid class 3 driver's license with air brake endorsement and a clean driver's abstract
• Medically fit as determined by a doctor appointed by the department
• Physically fit as determined by an occupation-specific fitness assessment
• NFPA 1001 Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications Level II Certified Firefighter
• Valid first aid and CPR certification, with preference given to medical first responder certification or above
• Strong swimming ability and ability to complete swift water rescue and ice rescue training courses
Candidates will be required to undergo an online written test along with physical and medical evaluations at their own expense. Candidates must be available for all pre-scheduled components of the selection process, including online and panel interviews and a skills evaluation day. Successful candidates who are offered a holiday relief firefighter position must also complete a 12-month probationary period, including quarterly evaluations, before qualifying for seniority on the holiday relief firefighter list.
POSITION DETAILS
• Holiday relief firefighters do not have a defined schedule and are subject to call-ins on short notice
• Holiday relief firefighters may be subject to up to seventeen (17) weeks of layoff annually
• Hours of work are defined in Section 12, Appendix A of the current collective bargaining agreement
• Rate of pay is per Appendix B of the current collective bargaining agreement
